Does having served in the military mean that you have more knowledge than anybody else?

I'm in a position where I'm working at a facility where the boss has a military background. He let's it be known at every meeting that "When I was in the military.......yada, yada, yada." And uses that to intimidate the employees with fear by threating them "If you don't like it, then I suggest you start looking else where for employment." Nobody is ever right, it's his way or the highway. Your idea or comments don't matter........."I'm the boss." What can be done about this behavior and does being in the military mean you know more than anybody else?

There's not much you can do about that except look for another job. Most intelligent people never have to rely on saying " when I was . . . . ". Ex-military personnel may very well be more organized, more calmer in stressful situations, but that can be said about lots of non-military people. It's a crutch for him to fall back on because of his own shortcomings. If I would you, I would start looking for somewhere else to work - or just keep you head down, stay off the radar and do your job well. As long as you do your job well, and don't come to his attention for anything bad, you'll be fine. With his attitude, he may not last long - unless, of course, he's the owner!.

This behavior doesn't have to do with the fact that he was in the military unless he had some traumatic experience or something. He's just a mean boss. The only things you can do are: stick with the job and live with him being a douche bag, wait for him to get fired/get a new job, or get a new job with a nicer boss. Being in the military by no means makes him know more than anyone else. It depends on the person. There are some extremely intelligent people in the military, and there are some extremely intelligent people not in the military. It just gives you the experience of war.

It's not the amount of knowledge that matters. It's how the knowledge is applied. It certainly helps in my college classes (after 13 years in the military, I have the kinds of experiences that make for some outstanding essays and research papers), but I have to guard against the narcissistic idea that the military is the end-all, be-all of my life experiences, or that other people have lived an unfulfilled life because they have never served in the military. I am definitely better-off than the 18 or 19-year old punks who just got out of high school and their parents are paying their bills for them. But if I am not going to use my education, training, and experiences to improve society and the lives of those around me, then my entire military career is pretty much worthless.

If he's the boss there's nothing you can do. It's good that he has a military background because people in the military have been trained to lead at some point of their career. So you just be a good worker and do what he says or else get another job.

  • Ya, no. Being in the military only says you were in the military. Most military people are just sheep and definitely don't have more knowledge than others. You could even say they know less. Like how to work well with people, in your bosses case. It seems he just likes power. I would say you should show that his sense of power means nothing but hes your boss so... If it bothers you enough, it would me, Start looking for a new job. Sorry Im not much help.

EDIT: All the military guys I know are.Im sure there are good ones too. like 5 military people I know are in jail now for raping a 12 yro girl. The rest give the stories and are obsessed with power.

Military officers come in all types. He sounds like he graduated from what I like to call the Adolf Hitler school of management. It can be very effective. But the fact that he is not in the military anymore, and was never on the fast track to becoming a general officer, indicates that he probably wasn't any more popular there than he is in your office.

Being in the Military means that we've gained certain experiences. But by no means does that mean that as a civilian you can act like a dick. He didn't get that attitude from the military, I can almost guarantee that.

  • In my experience such loud mouths were either never really in the military or were nothing special;\

Encourage him to talk about what he did etc. He will either trap himself and stop talking or he will think you are interested in his background and regard you higher than other staff

What would be interesting would be to hear HIS side or your story. Judging by many of your questions you seem to have a difficult time at work . Maybe there is more to this story than what your telling

No. That's just him. He would be the same if he was never there.
