my yamaha virago 1000 is backfiring and popping?

Hi I just picked up a Yamaha XV1000, it pops and backfires thru the exhaust, I heard it is the air pump or whatever it is in the left fake air cleaner. Which part usually gos bad, the round valve or the flat looking valve?

I'd be willing to bet its not an air pump. I bet the bike needs a valve adjustment, and the carbs synced. Virago's are notorious for the backfire from the valves being the slightest out of adjustment, and carbs not being tuned right. I've seen a few of them with the exact same problem, and they were all the same fix.

Is it when your rideing and let off the throttle? If it is then you could be running too lean, and you need to rejet your carb
