No standard.
Most departments have gone over to 9mm or. 40 S&W semi autos but plenty still use or at least authorizes .38 special and .357 revolvers.
There is no set standard. Each department can make its own rules. Most only allow specific high quality weapons. Many do not issue weapons, officer buy their own from an approved list.
There are over 12,500 different departments in the US, each with their own preferences.
For example a 357 is useless for most urban departments while it may be preferred buy a rural department.
An example. My states police only authorizes two models of .40 S&W wepons made by Springfield.
My larger department authorizes any full sized double action only .38 spec, 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 acp from Ruger, S&W, Glock, Springfield, Berrretta, Colt and Sig Saur.

Mostly, they all carry a semi-automatic pistol in either 9mm or .40 S&W calibers. Glock is the most common brand.
So a Glock 17 or Glock 22 would come closest to being the standard model.

Every agency has their own standards and process for issuing a weapon. So, there is no "standard issue" weapon.
Why would you think that the NYPD would have the same weapon as the Washington State Police?
And to the poster who posted about rounds being upgraded because kevlar can stop a 9mm, well, kevlar can stop a .40, .45, even a .44 magnum. Most body armor can stop a 12ga as well.

Depends on where you're from. In my area, they've recently upped their standard caliber to .40, because of the increasing number of gang members using Kevlar.... Where 9mm is too weak, and .45 is too strong, and often hits innocent bystanders.

Google is your friend, this is a very easy answer to find. It's a Glock .22
Source(s): Google it....the Glock 22 is by far and away the most common police issued gun, being purchased by 85% of all law enforcement in the U.S. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0BQY/is_7_5...
