why is explorer.exe using 60k+ memory?
i'm fairly tech savvy, and i have fixed problems like this before, but i can't find many resurces that answer my question. i dont have many background programs running. just the most basic necessary ones like my AV (which is paused) and poweriso with 2 drives (unmounted). as a result my mem usage is up to 1.6-ish gigs on idle. also firefox is retardedly slowed down. it keeps refreshing pages and flash stuff is exceedingly slow. no, i don't have a virus. this is all very recent, my mem usage was >900mb last week. any ideas?

Do you have a problem of space and virtual memory?
I use only 6,516 K! I guess I managed that one well! But you won't have the gorgeous look of today's Explorer. (You'll get used to it in a week or 2! and to exit, you will have to go to file! for Notepad, Wordpad, and Microsoft Office applications!).
Right-click My Computer icon>Properties>Advanced tab>Under "Performance": Click on Settings>Visual Effects tab>Click on "Adjust for best performance" (to get a retro look! Yep, that's the price to pay for space!)>Apply>OK.
Now on the same place, click on Advanced tab>Under "Virtual Memory" Click "Change">Click on "Custom size" radio button> and next to "Initial size (MB)" type 600 or less according to your PC>Next to "Maximum size (MB)" type 600 or less (type the same number)>Uncheck "System Managed size">OK>OK>OK.
Last advice, clear cache, and web browsing history and download history at least once a week. I even save my web paged or download onto a CD/USB stick memory as my PC has got only 256 MB of RAM.
Also for more space: right-click on an empty space of your Desktop>Properties>Under Background:select None>OK.
Enjoy the amount of space, and get use to the ugly look! XD
Source(s): It saved my virtual memory problems and space, and since then I got 20% of speedier Internet connection. So it's a worth a try! - Anonymous1 decade ago

Well, my explorer.exe is using 96,224k, so if you're at 60, that's pretty good. I wouldn't complain.
