How can you legally evict a tenant in Alabama who is not paying rent? What steps do you have to take?

You first give them a pay or quit notice by certified mail and you can also put it on their door.
If they ignore that (most are 3 or 5 day pay or quit) then you have to go down to the courthouse and file eviction papers, get a court date, go to court and then you can take the sheriff with you to have them get their *** out of your place.

I don't know about Alabama but if nobody here is able to help you with this state then I'd suggest looking through the blue pages (government pages) of your phone book for the department in your county or local government that handles this - it'll be under "Landlord Tenant Affairs" or something like that. Ask them the process and they will know it like the back of their hand. Also bear in mind that this can vary city to city so even if someone here knows about Alabama its likely the process for your part of Alabama is different.
