Has fenugreek helped anyone's milk supply?
I have been taking fenugreek pills (3 pills 3x a day) and I can still only pump about 4 ounces day, and I'm pumping everything I've got after each time my baby nurses. I am hardly pumping enough milk to cover the 10 hours a week I work, and I don't want to give up on it and give him formula yet. I've been taking the pills for about a week, what am I doing wrong?? I've read that drinking more water helps, has anyone seen a difference from drinking lots of water? I've also read that fenugreek only works if your breasts are emptied every few hours, and mine are definitely being emptied! Thanks for your help!

I took that much fenugreek, but I also took that much blessed thistle at the same time, as per Dr. Newman's recommendations. If you're in Canada, you can get a prescription for domperidone too.
Try pumping 1-2oz before nursing baby, then pump after baby's done (this helps ensure a good balance of fore/hind milk). You can pump on one side while baby nurses on the other (if you're co-ordinated). You can try a different pump (Freecycle!). Set a timer and pump every 3 hours, night and day.
You can also try the "lactation cookies" which have oatmeal and flaxseed in them.
Make sure to also avoid mint, sage, thyme, and trans fats. Many women who eat highly processed diets have a hard time making enough milk. And most Americans eat that sort of diet :(
Being dehydrated can definately make it harder, but you don't need to go to extremes with the water either.
I'd add in the blessed thistle, maybe try the cookies, and there's also "Mother's Milk" tea. I did get good results from the two herbs :)
And, you don't need to totally give up pumping...it's okay to give both, esp. if you keep up nursing while at home :)

I have taken that but I was told to also take Blessed Thistle with it (same amount) The lactation consultant said it could take a few weeks for it to really start working. After a few days it seemed to work but only lasted about 3 days, she also said to make sure you are nursing or pumping every 3 hours, I am still BF but have had to supplement with formula because unfortunately the fenugreek and b.t. didn't work well enough for me:( On the weekends, at night and on my days off she seems to be getting enough from me though:) I am learning that no matter what, a baby can work it a whole lot better then a pump!! Good luck!

The pills didn't do anything for me. I'm not sure it was because I didn't use them long enough, but I found it a huge pain to take 9 gross pills a day.
The only thing that worked fo me was More Milk Plus (only the plus, not the regular) - a tincture containing fenugreek and a few other galactogouges. I noticed a pretty significant improvement in 2 weeks using MM+, pumping before bed, and eating oatmeal every morning. The freaking crap is expensive, but it was worth it for me.
Good luck!

Fenugreek helps.
Just keep up what you're doing - eat more protein too. Keep pumping and nursing and pumping and nursing. It takes about 3 weeks for your supply to increase based on demand so your body will get the message soon.
Can you pump while you are at work? You should pump at any regular time your son would be nursing.
Hang in there. It gets easier. You can do this!

I tried fenugreek and it did not really help. If it did, it was a very slight bit. Ask your doctor about reglan. It is a Rx used for acid reflux, but I've heard it can help with supply. I did not try it because I could not get an OBGYN at the time because my insurance(medicaid) only allows you to have one when pregnant, and my primary care Dr. would not give it to me. I heard it helps though. Also, don't feel terrible if you have to use formula. If you are only working ten hours a week, I'm assuming you're with your baby the rest. You should be happy and realize that as long as you're physically with your baby as much as possible in the first year, that is what really matters.

It worked great for me, unfortunately by the time I learned about it we had started having to supplement, and he began to prefer bottles! Fought and fought to keep him nursing, he finally quit on me at 9 months. Bummer.
