Any ideas what's wrong with this mower?

I asked this in home and garden also, but I figured I'd be more likely to find a knowledgeable person here.

I am learning small engine repair, and right now I'm working on a mower. It came to me unable to keep running, seemed to flood and die. I did all the obvious stuff, replaced the spark plug and air filter because both were filthy, changed the oil which was basically sludge. The mower is running better, but after using it for about 20 minutes it dies. It also gets pretty hot before stopping. The cooling fins are clean, but the housing on one side is lower because of a wheel that's jammed in the wrong position, I need to figure out how to unjam it. Also the blade is very dull, has almost no cutting surface left. Could the dull blade be causing the engine to work harder and to overheat, and is it possible that the low rear housing on one side causing the blade to drag the ground and kill the engine? I don't feel or hear the blade dragging the ground, but it does seem to me that a dull blade would make the engine work harder.

Update:

Cindy, thanks. I was thinking that might be it. Its not actually the flywheel though, the engine does have a separate flywheel, but you're right about all the power going to the blade. That's why I was thinking that. As for the wheel, I think I need to get a couple of strong guys to help me unjam it, its not broken, the adjustment lever was just forced way past where it was supposed to be, and its stuck.

Update 2:

Thanks andrew, I did check the oil level first. I fear that the carburetor may have dirt in it because the air filter was SO bad.

The first thing to check is the oil level, make sure the oil level isn't low. Oil is an important part of the cooling process.

Have you adjusted the Carburetor? If the fuel mixture on the Carb isn't correct it can overheat too.

Check the gasket on the Carburetor and see if it has a leaky gasket.

Check to make sure the fuel tank vent or fuel tank screen isn't plugged.

You said the cooling fans were clean, but how about other parts of the engine? If it is dirty it can cause it to overheat too. Clean the inside of the blower housing, the flywheel fins, and also the flywheel cutting screen. ( If the flywheel cutting screen is dirty and you can't see through it, it can lessen the ability of your mower to cool itself too. )

I think its great that your learning engine repair and I hope that this gives you some more ideas ( and maybe even helps to solve your problem. )

It could very well be the blade. The blade in a mower is it's flywheel and is necessary for the mower to function properly. Check to see if the blade is at all loose or not bolted down right. I'd invest in a new one anyways since it is dull and crappy. Yes the blade dragging on the ground and catching could cause the motor to stop cranking and die because the motor's power is all going out directly to the blade so when that is obstructed, the motor would stop.
