What are some ways that a family can help with oil spill cleanup?
We live in Illinois, but might be willing to use our summer vacation time to travel somewhere to help, if that's possible.
But, besides that, are there any other ways we can help the volunteer organizations that are doing the work, rescuing wildlife, preserving shoreline, etc?
...And, yes, I did post this a while ago in the 'Environment' category, but answers are coming slowly there and I figured parents might have some ideas of things that they are already doing with their families (or have heard about doing as families)

I live in FL. The plan here is to not even start the clean-up until the oil is all done washing ashore. I have no idea how long that will take, but assuming long after summer vacation is over. Thanks for the offer though. I appreciate it!

There are bird rescues all over in Florida as far south as Miami. They always need help trapping, cleaning, transporting, and monitoring the birds. I'm sure they have marine mammal rescues as well. Here is one link that might help. Look in the section for volunteers. You might also be able to do fund raisers to help out these organizations. A lot of them are run strictly off donations.

I found this but I'm not sure if they have anything listed that is family friendly. From what I've read you need to have special gear on to clean up the spill (they started this only after people starting getting very sick!) I know Dawn detergent is involved in cleaning the animals- I think that would be something good for the kids to do and learn about.
*Just found links at the bottom of this article on how to volunteer to clean animals if you are interested. http://green.yahoo.com/blog/guest_bloggers/37/dawn...

Besides donating your hair, all you can do is donate money. Most of the tasks require special equipment and special training.
