Fate.
-in the beginning "pair of star-crossed lovers take their life"
They werent meant to ever live.
-Romeo shouts "O, I am fortune's fool!" after killing Tybalt this shows that he had no control over what he was doing and that he couldn't have done anything to prevent it
-When the letter doesn't reach Romeo in time this shows that fate wants Romeo to find Juliet dead and end up killing him self.

This may sound like a cop out, but Shakespeare was responsible for the deaths of his characters. He could have ended this story many different ways, yet, he chose not to do so. He chose to
teach the parents that a feud that was so ancient, that no one could even remember why it started, can end in the deaths of innocents. He chose to teach parents that if you keep lovers apart, you could fail, miserably.

Fate and the hatred of the families is what destined the couple to death. Everybody else with a catalyst along the way.

The person who pretended to be dead, because it caused the other to actually kill themselves, and then out of grief the other did actually kill themselves.
