Metal fans: Have you overlooked a significant genre of metal only to rediscover it later?

Growing up in the 80s I was very much into your classic metal standards, Maiden, Priest, Dio, Ozzy, Sabbath...etc and was also heavily into Thrash metal and even hair metal but for some reason when death metal arrived on the scene I really did not get into it, for whatever reason. It did not get completely overlooked but I did not develop the obsession that I did for other genres.

During the late 90s I started getting into Melodic Death metal and that became an obsession for several years. Over the last few years I have been going back looking backwards to discover or rediscover bands that I missed or forgotten about, which there are tons. Having gone through the genres I grew up listening to I have pretty much gone full circle and have come back to Death Metal. This time it is not getting overlooked. I am familiar and do have quite a bit of death metal, but no where near what I have of other genres.

MQ: Have you overlooked or dismissed a genre of metal to later rediscover it?

MQ2: I know when people refer to death metal they often tag it with a country or state, Florida Death Metal, Swedish Death Metal....etc. What are all the different regional sub-genres and what are the significant characteristics of their particular style of death metal?

MQ3: What are your favorite death metal bands?

BQ: I own a pizzeria, what is your favorite pizza topping combination?

Update:

@ Shred...loved Crystorm and Serpent thanks for posting them

Update 2:

@ Kingdom Black

I really liked Nocturnus. Massacre was ok but I liked Kam Lee's vocals better in Bone Gnawer.

Hey JP, this is an interesting question.....

Well, I used to overlook the thrash metal genre....which is strange as I have always been fond of death metal. But now I'm more interested in the genre, since it started death metal.

MQ2: Death metal is probably my favorite genre of metal. Finnish Melodic Death metal has a power metal sound with more melody and harsh growling to it, some bands even incorporate singing into their overall sound.

Swedish Death metal is more heavier, more guitars, less singing, and overall deeper growling.

American Death metal or Florida DM is where this whole thing started in the first place. For some reason, I've listened to quite a few bands from the area. The sound is definitely brutal, very heavy, and with less keyboards than the European sound. Since this is where death metal started, I'd say the sound is very Thrash-like and with much deeper growling than normal.

Lastly, since I'm Canadian, I enjoy hearing about Canadian Death metal bands as well. They all come from Montreal and Quebec...which I'm not exactly sure why. But the sound is very technical, heavy, and progressive.

MQ3: Some bands I think you should listen to are:

Nocturnus (Florida), Massacre, Bone Gnawer, Sacrifice, Slaughter (Canada), Nasty Savage, Hallows Eve....here's a couple Canadian bands..... Gorguts, Quo Vadis, and Ex Deo.

BQ: I'm Italian so this is easy....my favorite is the traditional pepperoni and cheese with great tomato sauce.

when I first got into metal, I completely overlooked symphonic metal, but about 4 months ago I got into it, and now it's my 2nd fav. genre of metal.

MQ2: not too sure, but I've noticed that generally Melodeth from Finland sounds a lot like power metal with harsh vocals and has lots of synthesizers, Sweden's is heavier in the guitars, but a little slower, and the vocals are deeper and less synth, Japan's is heavy in the guitar harmonies (again, just a generalization)

MQ3: if you count melodeth, Eluveitie, Scar Symmetry, Into Eternity, Serpent, Kalmah, In Flames, Cryostorm, and a lot more, but I'd be here all day if I had to name them all.

BQ: good old cheese and peperoni

like you i grew up with the 80s style metal...getting into thrash, and abit of death metal.

when i first heard black metal...my first thought was what is this garbage? terrible production, the higher pitch screaches, and whats up with the corpse paint?

but if you ask alot of users here, its probably my favourite genre now...the variety and skill that some of these bands have is really good...i.e.,

    Sacramentum

    Nocte Obducta

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s733vGzxY-Q

MA2:I think Swedish death metal, has that scuzzy tone in their guitars (grave, dismember, Entombed) where as the florida scene progressed from thrash and is almost a heavier version of it. don't have too much else...but i can definitely tell the difference

    MA:

    Atheist

    Edge of Sanity

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUQ9ueUbMeA

    Katklysm -love the album sorcery

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPFuRRmhVt8

    Nile

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Fe5vTNOdt4

gorguts, immolation, entombed, suffocation....to many to name

BA: well i like anything...but i probably order some sort of meat lovers the most

I don't pay any attention to genres - if I like something, I listen to it.
