In an empty gym, why would you jump on the treadmill next to me?

O.K. this may not be a pet peeve to everyone but I find it terribly annoying. I usually run outside, but because it is now getting very hot I have to run at the gym. When I am running in an empty gym with 15 treadmills available, I always get people who run right next to me men and women. Running is hot as it is, why would you subject me to your body heat, perfume/cologne or sweat, when you can have your own area 1 or 2 treadmills away?. Is this just me, or do you feel the same?

Put an "out of order" sign on the treadmill next to yours. Or put a water bottle on the treadmill so they think someone is using it and coming back.

You have a gym crush. JK. Some people do it because they feel a sort of similarity and covalent friendship. That is to say, they do it as almost a group run partner on the treadmill. Some of them are just there to chat it up and see it as an opportunity to take something that they find mundane and make it interesting.

People do this sometimes for the company and other times people do it cause they think that you could be someone to compete against and feel better about themselves if they are running faster than you.

I hate that too. I guess some people just aren't as sensitive to socially awkward or possibly impolite situations.
