If i donated meat to a wolf rescue would it be considered a tax write off?

My husband and I have a whole freezer full of beef and pork that we need to get rid of. About $500 worth. We were considering donating it to a local wildlife rescue but wasn't sure if it would be considered a tax write off for something like that. Just wondering if they did that or even if we can donate something like that. Any input if you have any would really help. I don't know where we would even start. Thanks in advance.

Update:

I was able to donate to a rehabilitation center that was definitely in need of it. Thanks for your suggestions.

If you are donating it to a non-profit it can be but you will need to get a receipt from them.

The problem is many places probably wont be able to take it. There are many rules that surround the donations of food, even more so with meat when it comes to animal based facilities. The problem is they do not know if the meat is good or bad, how it was stored, etc, etc, etc. More or less it could be dangerous to the animals to take meat without knowing the full history. It is not to say that you did not store it properly or that it is bad meat... the rules are just designed to protect the animals since most facilities are governed by state fish and wildlife or the USDA.

That is not to say that you might not find a place that can take it, just know that it might be tricky.

What you might also want to look into is food shelters. Believe it or not it is easier to donate food to needy humans than needy animals.

    Good luck.

if it's a registered non-profit charitable organization, then yes. Get them to write you a receipt that includes the value of your gift.
