As for HBS, according to their website, 50% of the Class of 2009 scored between 700 and 740 on the GMAT.
It's hard to address your last question. Think about your career goals. Most b-schools will publish information about the career achievements of their alumni on their website, in addition to the interests of current students--look to see if your aspirations match theirs. There is no one career path to follow post-MBA program, but there are certain careers in which an MBA will help put you on the fast-track to success.
