What was early labour like for you?
I'm 38 weeks today and I can't tell if what I'm experiencing is the beginning of labour or not. With my son I had back labour and only felt it in my back, so I'm not sure what I should be looking for. When I stand up my stomach cramps. I have occasional short stabbing like pain in my lower right abdomen which my midwife told me was probably a pulled ligament. But I've also gotten a couple of shooting pains in my pelvic region. It is not painful at all, more of a discomfort. The baby is still moving but not kicking, more like rumbling feeling in my belly. I had a very strong urge that I had to have a BM right away, but when I got up the feeling wasn't as urgent and I didn't go very much, but it was my 3rd BM today.
So, does that sound like early labour or am I just being hopeful? I had my son at 38wks 2days.

It doesn't sound like you're experiencing any regular contractions, which would indicate early labor. But, it does sound like your body is getting ready. If the contractions were early labor, they would happen sitting down, laying down, standing up, whatever. They might be faint, but, they'll be regular and continuous.
That's how mine all started. Faint, but regular pains insidish and around my belly.

Early labor is when your whole abdomen tightens for a little bit every once in a while and this can go on for days and even weeks, sharp pains are not early labor nor are shooting pains but your cervix complaining.

Doesn't sound like labour to me.
Contractions or your water breaking are the best signs of something starting. What you're describing just sounds like the last few weeks of pregnancy.
