What do you think about my coffee shop idea?
I am a 21 year old female and my dream is to open a local fair trade coffee shop where people can come and enjoy a good cup of coffee in a calm comfortable environment? Do you think that is a undo-able dream? Do you have any suggestions on things I should do in my shop or not do? Let me know you thoughts and opinions about it. Thanks!

Hey if that is your dream then run with it. You have to enjoy what you do and do it well.
Location is going to be extremely important for you. If you will be in an area where you will receive a nice volume of customer traffic then you have a chance to do quite well.
I promote eco friendly home products etc and I was speaking with someone with a coffee shop and he stated that at times it can be a bit of a struggle!
So incorporating something else in with the coffee shop idea may be necessary. Arts, Crafts, jewellry - I don't know - but again it will depend on location.
The person I spoke to is considering doing what I do to add to his income stream. He already has a small customer base coming in for coffee, cake etc.
If you can't increase the quantity of customers too much - then you need to increase the customers spend amounts while they are there!
Keep looking out for ideas - but make it something you are into or passionate about.
It is really important - I love our planet and I care about people and so that works brilliantly with my role. I enjoy working - I enjoy helping.
If you do not work with something that hits your heart - it will simply become a job and the daily grind will get to you in the end.
Good luck with it. Don't be put off - just work to combine a few ideas to make it happen and you will have a greater chance of success and don't invest too heavily. What you learn will be a major gain even if it doesn't work out.

My first reaction is "don't even think about it". The question you've posted doesn't include any details about how much money you have or where you are, which to me suggests that you don't have the first clue about how to set up or run a business. For every successful venture there are 99 failed ones and you are going to be one of the 99 if you don't actually have a good plan.
Yes it can be done but you've GOT to find the right place to set up shop, make 100% sure you know what ALL the costs are, find money to hire staff (never work with friends or family), come up with a really interesting and fun place that people will want to come to, ADVERTISE IT SO PEOPLE KNOW THE COFFEE SHOP IS THERE and probably the most important thing is to keep reinventing the business with fresh new ideas to increase profits and draw in more customers; if the shop isn't a fun place to be for you then it's not likely to be a fun place for the customers either.
Ask around; you might even consider going out on the streets with a clipboard and asking members of the public for their opinions on what they'd like to see in a local coffee shop.

Go fo it. The hospitality trade has a huge rate of failure, but mostly because people don't realise how much work is involved in being open all day every day - you can't just close or not turn up to work.
Do your research first - make sure your cafe is not in an area already saturated, and that there is a market for your product. You have a Unique Selling Point (fair trade probably isn't enough - what about veggie as well? WIFI, etc) and look for other revenue streams - can you have your cafe business during the day, and rent it to someone else as a separate cafe/restaurant business in the evening, or maybe rent space to artists, markets, DJ's etc? Will help cover your costs and theirs.
Just think differently, think revenue streams, but think 'cost' and 'profit' first - you need to make a living out of this as well.

Look, don't let others discourage you. Find a good location with little or no coffee shops. Find a niche, probably place free wifi, some healthy snacks, etc.. Think of something, unique outside the box. Re-invent coffee, when you become a millionaire/billionarie I'll be happy if you donate 1 % to me, lol :D
