'Shoot the Piano Player" (Francois Truffaut, 1960, from the sleazy American pulp novel "Down There" by David Goodis). Classical pianist (Charles Aznavour) from the wrong side of the tracks gets his big concert tour after his wife secretly has sex with a promoter because she loves her husband so much she will do anything to make his career happen. Pianist finds out the facts but not his wife's motives, and mistakenly believes she doesn't love him. He tells her he has contempt for her. She commits suicide. Then le learns the truth and is so horrified he gives up the classics and punishes himself by taking a job playing dopey pop tunes in a honky-tonk bar. And that's only the first half of the story.
