Back yesteryear a small steel barrel was installed which had an small opening in the top for access. The water would enter the bottom and exit near the top. any large obstruction would stay in the drum for removal through the service port on top and not travel through the plumbing. A small amount of water was always in the drum to keep sewer gas from going back into the house. You now have the s or p trap for this. Hope this helps.

A drum trap is an older component that was once commonly used in plumbing systems. Essentially, drum traps are devices that help to prevent larger and heavier items from entering the drain and lodging in the plumbing itself. Over the years, a similar device known as a plumbing trap, or P-trap, has largely replaced the older drum trap, although there are still some situations where the older design is still a good option.

Note that the top of the drum trap is supposed to be at floor level and accessible.
