why do they call it SFO?
I've always been curious.....why cant they just call it SFX? or SFI?
its San Francisco International Airport.......I dont see a word beginning with an "O" anywhere!!!

They get the "O" from the last letter of "FranciscO".
Some of the registered airport codes are as old as the start of aviation itself (one example is New Orleans which is "MSY" for Moissant Stock Yards, which is what it was before it became an airport).
Also, airports are usually named after the biggest city they serve, not their status (International, National, Municipal, etc.). Until 1955 it was simply known as "San Francisco Municipal Airport".
