The most helpful thing you can do is start a food diary...you can keep track online or by hand.
http://www.mypyramidtracker.gov/ - this is what i use and i love it! it keeps track of the nutritonal information of what you have eaten, and how much of each food group you've eaten per day. then it tracks the progress from week to week.
After every meal, log what you have eaten. Then, figure out what else you need that day to have a fully balanced diet. For example, if I had a large salad for lunch but no fruits, I need to make sure I get fruit as a part of my dinner. Planning your meals ahead of time is a great way to stay on track, too.
Eat breakfast every day right when you wake up. Have healthy things like whole grain toast with peanut butter or jam, fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, or cold cereal with milk. Oatmeal is one of the healthiest things you can eat.
Try to have at least 1 or 2 servings of vegatables and fruit at lunch. For example, I try to eat a salad every single day for lunch and load it up with every fruit and vegatable I have in my fridge (lettuce, olives, onions, carrots, celery, blueberries, raspberries, etc.). You can even add walnuts, almonds, or pistachios on top. (Nuts are one of the best foods you can eat...in moderation...to have a healthy diet) Try salad without dressing...dressing adds a lot of unneeded calories and once you get used to it, salad tastes good without it!
Keep healthy snacks around for when you get hungry. Fruit (bananas, oranges, apples with peanut butter), vegatables (celery and carrots with dip, pickles), chips with salsa, hummus and pita chips, healthy energy bars, pretzals, trail mix, yogurt, etc.
Another good tip is to try not to eat 3 to 4 hours before you go to bed. I usually try not to eat after 7:30 every night. If you wake up starving, it means you've lost calories in your sleep, and this way you are hungry for a nice big, healthy breakfast. Breakfast should be the most important meal of the day.
I have a sweet tooth too, so I try hard not to buy anything too unhealthy. That way, if its not in the house, I can't eat it. But definutely dont deprive yourself of dessert. Chocolate pudding is delicious and isn't bad for you...buy the little pudding cups to keep as snacks. I also keep things like Andes mints or little Dove chocolates handy. If I am feeling like chocolate, I'll eat one or two at the most.
Check out Self.com for a lot more healthy eating ideas. They have a food tracker on their website as well, although its a little more confusing that My Pyramid Tracker. They also have a lot of good recipies, menus, and food plans!

Imo, dieting is pointless and depressing itself, and most people who do are always looking for a diet to tell them what to eat now. All that does it get your hopes up that this time it will work, but after you fail the diet you feel even worse about yourself then you started. So I say Blah to dieting. What I think you should do is make sure to get the basic nutrition your body needs i.e protein, carbohydrates, good cholesterol, and start with that. You don' t need all the Dieting Dogma that makes you feel like crap. Diets are unrealistic since everyone is different, what works for someone wont work for someone else, so running around looking for the next best diet that's actually gonna work this time isn't gonna help or make you feel good. But if you want to enjoy a cookie sometimes or have some ice cream, go ahead and find balance with that because you know when you deny yourself something completely, like diets want you to do, you just end up finding yourself eating away at whatever you were denying yourself. And as someone said earlier, food journals are very effective, since they show you what you have eaten because honestly your not gonna want to see Egg Apple chocolate nuts chocolate chocolate... So think about starting one of those, it can be very helpful. I'd advise you to get this book "Perricone Prescription" if you can afford it. It has information on all types of different foods and their pros and cons, so you can find for yourself food that work for you.

This may sound odd, but stop eating salad!!! Well, I don't mean that. If you want to eat salad, skip the dressing. That will take a LOT of calories off your meal. I personally LOVE hummus, and that's a good source of protein. Eat cheese in moderation. Cheese is super high in fat. Don't start out working out too much at the beginning. Start moderately and continue with it. Good luck to you!

Cut out soda, my hubby used to drink almost a 12 pack of coke a day. When he quit drinking coke he lost 20 pounds in only a few months. Go for walks of at least 30 mins at a time a few times a week.
