How many mg of salt in one teaspoon?

I'm on a low salt diet and trying to make my own foods low in sodium. Approximately how many mg of dietary sodium in a well measured teaspoon?

Also, if you have any low sodium food ideas to replace gravies, sauces, dips and dressings I would really like to hear your ideas!

Average of 4.93 - 5ml in a teaspoon (depending upon density) which means it would be about 4930 - 5000mg in a teaspoon.

As far as low sodium recipes - just omit salt from any recipe that calls for it or use a salt substitute. Generally speaking, foods have enough salt content without having to add any.

Now if you are asking about how many mg of sodium are in a teaspoon of salt then the following applies:

Sodium chloride or table salt is approximately 40% sodium. Understand just how much sodium is in salt so you can take measures to control your intake.

    1/4 teaspoon salt = 600 mg sodium

    1/2 teaspoon salt = 1,200 mg sodium

    3/4 teaspoon salt = 1,800 mg sodium

    1 teaspoon salt = 2,400 mg sodium

In a well measure teaspoon of WHAT?

If you want to know how many miligrams of SODIUM are in one teaspoon of SALT - the answer is 2,325 miligrams.

That is more than a person on a sodium restricted diet should be having in an entire day!

If you are sodium restrictions - you do not add salt to anything! Period!

Some foods just aren't palatable without tons of salt - so things like soups, gravies, ham, curred meats, soy sauce and other flavor sauces are just out of the question. It is possible to make a controlled sodium vinaigrette salad dressing at home, though.

Some hidden sources of sodium that do not taste salty: Baked goods make with baking powder, dairy products including milk and cheese.

One of the BEST web resources for very-low sodium ideas is the mega-heart website at: http://www.megaheart.com/ They have cookbook for sale - but a lot of the information is available on their site...it has a ton of information on low-sodium cooking/eating.
