What is the best flea killer for cats aside from Frontline or Advantage?

We are adopting 2 kittens soon and are looking into flea killers for 2 kittens who are 12 weeks old. I know that Frontline and Advantage are top of the line, if not the best flea killers....however the price is a little steep at $50 per month for 2 cats (when bought in 3 month supplies).

Aside from these 2 brands, what are some good options for flea killers/preventatives that work well for cats? Both will be exclusively indoor cats.

Thanks!

Update:

I forgot to mention...I am looking to spend $25-30 a month or less for both cats combined.

That's $25 per month per cat....you can do better. Contact your local vet clinics and ask how much their flea meds are for cats, I think you'll be surprised. The vets in our area vary between $12 and $22 per dose for the exact same thing. There's definately a price range on this.

Source(s): (added) We only treat when fleas show up-- every 2 weeks I use a comb on them and check for flea dirt or fleas, and in 4 years I've only had to treat maybe 3 times total. Ours are indoors, we also check the outdoor stray we feed and keep him covered as well. If yours don't have fleas, you don't need to treat them. Do it sparingly. And don't do a treatment more than once every 4 weeks, you can't double dose without causing major problems to their liver function.

With Capstar which will kill all adult fleas on the cat within a few hours but lasts only 24 hours, you have to either use something like Frontline or Advantage to keep the, from being re-infected or keep giving them Capstar every 3 to 4 days. It's safe to use every day but 3 to 4 days is often enough to break the cycle and keep the fleas from laying eggs. The minimum dose for Capstar is 1 mg per kg of pet (1kg is 2.2 lbs) and the Capstar for Dogs 25 lbs and over (57 mg per pill) is almost the same price as Capstar for Cats and Dogs 2 to 25 lbs (11 mg per pill) so if you're comfortable cutting pills, crushing them, mixing with petfood and dividing that down to get the minimum dose, you can cut back on costs big time. Capstar is safe for kittens as young as 4 weeks and safe for nursing mothers.

Captstar is an oral pill that is given when you see fleas. It will kill all the fleas on the cat within 30 minutes. It is best to use this product along with frontline or advantage. Capstar is not a preventative such as frontline or advantage, but it does a wonderful job at killing the fleas that are currently on the cat. Be sure to clean their bedding, and carpeting, as fleas love to hang out there.

My vets always recommend Stronghold to me, they seem to look down their nose when I mention that I use Frontline, not sure why as I have always found Frontline very effective although somewhat expensive.

    Stronghold.

Order a "kit" from ebay you'll have to syringe it out yourself but it will be cheaper and work just fine! i saw some on there for around 15.95 for 8 cat treatments That is how I get mine for my cats and my dog
