You could be sane and say that it was struck by lightening because it obviously attracts lightening.
Or you could be insane and claim that god was striking it because he doesn't like idol worship. (or insert any other reason god was striking it)
By going with the latter, you are saying that god has nothing better to do that sit around and strike down statues, while thousands of people are starving every day.
@sioux oh, the irony.
EDIT: I don't believe I was clear, and I apologize for my ambiguity.
"Why spend $250,000 on a statue when there are
people out there starving???? How Christian is that?"
I agree completely, but if you think that it was a waste to build the statue because it inhibits the helping of the starving, are god's priorities in order if he is wasting time striking it down, when their are starving people?

(I'm assuming that you are taking the view that God the Father causes everything that happens so I'll answer you in that sense, although I'm not saying that that is true or not) You ask a Christian why God did something in the world, and expect that we have the answer. We can have assumptions yes, but the fact is, we have many restraints on our understanding, if you would, take our shoes for a second. We only live in the present, and only have extremely limited knowledge. You think we understand everything God does, who isn't defined by time and is omniscient? Although it isn't the best analogy, wouldn't this be like asking a dog (if it could speak) why it's master told him to sit? How should the dog know? The dog doesn't have the same amount of knowledge it's impossible to say definitely why, although it could hazard a guess I suppose. If this is what you are asking, then I guess God the Father could be upset at the fact of how Jesus is being portrayed to the world through "Touchdown Jesus" and therefore destroyed it, but do I know? Of course not.

Oh I thought you meant on the cross. When God punished the real Jesus for the sins of mankind so that we could have a guilt-free relationship with God and be forgiven.
Touchdown Jesus was just a 6 story piece of fiberglass with steel rods inside it. Of course it's going to attract lightning.

Jesus is God in the flesh, He didnt like the GRAVEN IMAGE
which we are not to have, and that is one of the 10 commandments.
Why spend $250,000 on a statue when there are
people out there starving???? How Christian is that?
That group of people need to be SCARED.
I am and I dont live any where near that.

First of all, it was only a statue. We worship the real Jesus, not a statue.
Second of all, lightning destroyed the Statue. No, God was not angry with Jesus.

No Jesus, wasn't blown to bits, but there was a fire of a statue depicting an artist's conception of Jesus.
