a^4 - 8a^2 + 16
let x = a^2 then:
x^2 - 8x + 16 =
(x - 4)^2 >> substitute back a^2 for x
(a^2 - 4)^2 =
(a - 2)^2 (a + 2)^2

_______________________________
a^4 - 8a^2 + 16
= (a²)² - 8a² + 4²
= [a² - 4]²
= [a² - 2²]²
= [(a+2)(a-2)]²
= (a+2)²(a-2)²
