Any Ball Python Help would be useful.?

I bought a Ball Python yesterday to go along with my other assortment of creatures. Its the first one i've bought and i would rather get advice from people with experience rather than the petsmart people hired off the street. I just got him last night and i think i've got his cage set up as perfectly as possible right now with the basking area and overall temp and humidity. About an hour ago he ate a decent size fuzzy and retreated to his hiding spot on the warm side which leads me to believe his environment is comfortable enough for him. I know you are not supposed to handle them long before or after a feeding. Before so he wont get use to seeing your hand at dinner time... and after because he may still be in rage mode. How many days after a feeding should i wait to hold him? I just got him and he seemed neglected by the employees so i would like to continue getting him use to being held. I got him last night and apparently nobody has handled him or tried to feed him since a week from wednesday. I'm just trying to get some idea's of the best way to take care of him since it is my first snake.

Very good choice on getting a ball, they are great beginner snakes and are very laid back! You should wait at least 4-6 days before holding him after feeding. Also balls have a habit of going on 'hunger strikes' and can be very stubborn to get them to eat again. If he stops eating, don't try and force feed him the mouse, wait a day and then try to feed it, force feeding will put him under stress. Another way you could get him to eat is to dip the mouse in chicken broth (trust me it works) Baby balls should be fed every 5-7 days and as adults, they should be fed every week to 10 days. When your snake is getting ready to shed, put a moist hide in his cage or a water bowl on the warm side. Balls like to climb so give them stuff to climb on. Exo-Terra reptile bark is the best for keeping humidity and my snakes fav. thing to do is slither around on a silky blanket! Also here are some of my fav. care sheets!

Because you just got him, allow about a week or so, to begin handling your ball python. This will give your snake some time to adjust to it's enclosure, claim it as his new home and, become overall comfortable and secure. Wait 24-48 hours for digestion to fully take it's course before handling your ball python. The best time to handle a ball python is either around dusk or, in the evening. The reason being is that these are mostly nocturnal snakes. They will sleep most of the time during the day. By handling your snake gently you will be creating a positive experience for your snake when you handle it. Sometimes an accidental bite can occur. This happens mostly when your hands have the scent of mice on them so, washing your hands is best before handling your ball python. The other situation that could result in an accidental bite would involve startling your snake while it is sleeping. If you are going into your snake's cage during the day for any reason, let him know you are entering by getting his attention without scaring him. Begin handling your ball python 3 times a week for about 15 minutes each time. Once your ball python becomes comfortable being handled, you can handle him a little more often. Ball pythons are shy secretive snakes. Their privacy is important to them. Some ball pythons have been over-handled to the point that they will stop feeding. If your ball python ever refuses to accept food for any reason other than exhibiting fasting behavior, stop handling it till it begins to feed regularly again. Feed your ball python every 5-7 days. Your concerns about the best care for your snake is great! You are going to make a good snake keeper.

Ball Python fingers down. I labored for a at the same time at an Iguana rescue location, and definite, you could get a bit of extra interplay with an Iguana, however no longer all that interplay goes to be best. They will also be very competitive for no obvious motive, and are available breeding season they are competitive at all times. That, paired with their giant dimension, makes for an attractive damaging first reptile. I'd begin with the python, beginning with the scale back upkeep animal is in general great whilst deciding if reptiles are relatively your factor. If a couple of years down the road after taking good care of any other reptiles and you've got performed plenty of study and nonetheless desire an Iguana, opt for it. But I'd wait until then, considering they are a ton of labor, each and every unmarried day. There are different giant lizards which can be a lot less difficult to hold and feature nicer tendencies, I'd study one of the vital smaller displays (smaller than a Savannah) and tegus if I had been you.

It sounds perfect he ate the first day u got him? thats amazing. Ive had balls that wouldt eat until 2 months after I got them. its not really the seeing ur hand thing at dinner is not that big of a deal but i do have a really good idea try to feed him in a a plastic stoage tub or a box and make sure its closed ull be very suprised of hoe high mice can jusmp I have one jump out af a 3 foot high tub b4. becuase then theyll never have food in there cage and wont mistake ur had for food. but really a not handleing him at dinner is good becuase some snake get sick (kinda like a motion sickness) and puke and snake puke is very gross.ull get 2 see a half digested mouse.lol. umm they like warm baths but not 2 hot. I give mine baths kinda like how you test the water for a baby against ur wrist but make it a lil bit warmer. check ur snake for little wrinkles on his eyes that means he has eye caps(wich are ofter left by the people who dont take enough care of them at the pet store) some snakes have troble getting rid off there eye caps which is pretty much its shed on its eyes.the eye caps can cuase blindness and discomfort. you can help him get them off by putting baby oil on a q tip and gentaly useing it to massage his eyes. sorry about all of my mis spelling but If you have any questions at all Email me abby_lela@yahoo.com
