So, how many Christians on R&S are former Atheists?

I was an atheist for many years before coming to believe in God again, and I believed in God and Jesus Christ for many years before I became a Christian. I've seen a few other people refer to themselves as ex-atheist, I'm just wondering who else besides me has been an atheist and has come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ? (Much like C.S. Lewis and Lee Strobel, BTW)

Update:

@doozlebong: I denied that God existed, and said that we are just here to live and then we become worm food. Does that count as atheism?

I understand what your saying, however I am quiet confused by this.

Generally there is no going back. This will sound offensive to you but I write this because I am trying to be objective.

If you were an atheist then went back to Christianity then you would have to suspend your logic and reason and ignore all scientific evidence in addition to the flaws and inconsistencies in the bible.

Many atheists are quiet passionate about this topic especially those who truly believed in it at one stage. I believe that people believe in religion for different reasons and not just because it is the "truth". Some people believe simply because of cultural or family pressure, positive emotions elicited through prayer, fear of hell or heaven if they are wrong about not believing (Pascal's wager). People may be in various emotional states and may "need" to believe in something..anything..in order to feel like someone is watching out for them and giving them a purpose.

However, if an atheist believes in a religion again due to evidence or logic then I would implore them to reconsider. The unknown is not so scary.

  • Worked in a nursery at the hospital several times. Newborns are born knowing nothing. Zip nadda nothing. They can only respond to stimuli, A newborn doesn't know what atheism is anymore than Christianity is. A"There is no God" will get a coo and a drool from a newborn, just like "There is a God". Newborns don't even know how to suckle, some learn quickly some don't.

    Sorta kinda

I am a cradle Catholic who never really got into it. From roughly 1986 to 2003 I hardly set foot in a church except for Christmas, Easter, weddings and funerals. I had a re-conversion when I became serious with my strict Irish-Catholic girlfriend / now wife.

I'm a Catholic who didn't go to church for seventeen years, I guess that's why I get along much better with atheists than with fundies.

This is why on average atheists have a higher IQ than Christians. Religion preys on the weak minded. This is almost a form of natural selection.

I was more of an agnostic because even though I said that I didn't believe in God, I did not have a positive belief that there was no God. I was open to finding out.

You know... I've encountered dozens of Christians who claimed to be an 'ex-atheist'. The funny thing is, not a single one of them actually knew what an 'atheist' IS.

I have never entertained atheism as a plausible alternative.

All of them, because everyone is born an atheist.
