How far would Ireland have got in this World Cup if they weren't robbed by France?

As an Irish fan I'm extremely happy that France have been knocked out, however I'm also a little disappointed. To be honest France were terrible at this World Cup and I can't help but feel that if Ireland were in Group A instead of France they could have gone far. In my opinion it would have gone something like this,

Ireland 1-2 Uruguay (My heart says a 1-1 draw, but my head says no. However, it's impossible to tell with Ireland.)

Ireland 1-0 Mexico

Ireland 2-0 South Africa

Round of 16

Ireland 1-2 Argentina (aet, I think Ireland would be really psyched for this game and would probably take it to Extra Time, but I think Argentina would just see them off.)

OR

Ireland 2-1 South Korea (If Ireland had finished top of Group A.)

Quarter-Finals

Ireland 1-1 Ghana (Would go to penalties, but would be tough to call then.)

OR

Ireland 1-0 USA (I think Ireland would win this one.)

OR

Ireland 1-0 England (If England had topped Group B, Ireland would have been to psyched for this match for England to stand a chance as well as England being rather poor at this World Cup.)

OR

Ireland 1-2 Germany (Yeah, I think Ireland would be lucky to pinch a goal here.)

Semi-Finals

Even if Ireland got to this stage, I think their run would come to an end here.

Update:

"If Ireland were the last to qualify, they aren't that strong"? Haha, my friend Uruguay have just made it to the quarters and they were the last to qualify!

Update 2:

Saint Iker, How the F*** can you say the USA would beat Ireland. They drew with England 1-1 after a blunder by Green and only because of that, they were lucky to draw with Slovenia and a late Goal against Algeria put them through (Ireland bet Algeria 3-0 before the finals just so you know.), Mexico and Ireland would be an extremely tight match and so would a match with Ghana.

PS There is no need to be such a tit about it either. Have some manners eh? ;)

Update 3:

Ravens, Thanks for being polite about it and all but I must say France weren't playing as badly against Ireland as they were in the World Cup. I mean they weren't boycotting their training just yet back then! Thanks anyway man.

LMAO... USA, Ghana, Mexico... would beat Ireland.... and England and Germany would put 4 past them...

I hate it when people say Ireland were robbed, even if you did win that match 1-0 it would have still gone to extra time and penalties... and France would most likely win there... get over it, Ireland wouldn't make it past the group stage, plus Ireland wouldn't have been in the group anyway as they're not a top seed.... France are...

EDIT - USA ruined Algeria, had a goal rongly disallowed, should have been 4,5-0.... lucky againt Slovenia? They also had a goal rongly disallowed... did you even watch these games... oh you mean Ireland won in a friendly? nice one... just face it, Ireland are simply not good enough...

If the Irish got France's spot on Group A, I def would have seen Mexico finish first in Group A, and Ireland finish second. That would mean Ireland would face Argentina in the round of 16, and probably losing to them. But hey, Ireland would have done A WHOLE LOT BETTER than the French

Saint Iker > Lets say for arguments sake that Ireland were cheats and would do anything to get through - which is the opposite to their style of play - it would be anarchy because cheating would be in every match so what would be the point of football?? None. We could have boxing with "Tysons Rules" all fighters are allowed to bite off an opponents ear, wow !!!

Cheating has to be dealt with hard by the Refs and FIFA. Its too late for Ireland but what gets my goat is the number of people who dont have a problem with dirty fouls and cheating and accept it as "PART OF THE GAME" OK let players do a Thiery Henry cheat but also let them get the red card and a ban for ten matches. do you think the game would improve ? I do.

The current self destruction of the French team stems from their feeling they got there by cheating and would have no honour even if they won the cup.

Man, I hate to knock another person's team...but you did all these permutations and you couldn't even pass France to get through the door? Look at all the stronger teams that DIDN'T squeak their way into the World Cup....They all went through (for the most part...You could argue Italy, France, and Denmark did not live up to expectations).

That said...a team like Ireland would be singing Auld Lang Syne as they exited in the first round.

Considering how horrible France was, and the very fact that Ireland couldn't surpass them for an entry into the World Cup, umm...I think Ireland would have given North Korea a run for the money as the worst finisher in the 2010 World Cup. France certainly tried to outdo North Korea in that category.

    Just my opinion....Slainte!

    See you in 4 years...maybe.

Yes Ireland would have given everything as the Irish team always does. We may not have the level of quality, but as this world cup shows, you get nowhere without effort. Of course no Irish player would ever leave a world cup squad and cause divisions....oh. Having hinted at the second Irish Civil war of (2002 - Present), even with the problems we had in 2002, the Irish players still gave it all and did us proud.

It is hard to say, they certainly would have done better than the french, but I still think they would fail to make it to the last 16 because Uruguay and Mexico are too strong.

If Ireland was the last to qualify, then I don't think they are that strong.

They would have taken the place of Mexico (which means they would have faced Argentina which means they would have been dead)

    Source(s): not very far
  • Nah, the Irish were losing to the French anyway...
