If legislation were considered to allow secession, would you support it? If so, why?

There was a time, not all that long ago, that I believed that the deep divisions within the US could be resolved. Now I am not so sure, and question whether we would should divide the nation and go our separate ways.

Update:

Anthony~ Yes, I am speaking of peaceful separation.

Update 2:

Dewdrop, It is attitudes such as your's that make me want it so desperately. Can you not disagree without demonizing a person?

Update 3:

truth seeker~ I consider Abe Lincoln as our greatest president. That was another era, and currently, I see remaining one nation as crippling, and possibly killing, us.

Update 4:

Croco~ I love our current president. He is not the reason I see dividing the nation as a potential solution.

Update 5:

And Sophie, Live as you wish. I see the problem as those who would (and do) resist others choosing their own way of life simply because they do not agree with or understand it.

Excellent responses, people! I do not agree with all, but most are quite respectful! Maybe there is hope after all!

Update 6:

Sophie, I have not called anyone who disagrees with Obama a racist. Seems you are reading (pardon the pun) something that is simply not there.

No. Lincoln was right. A house divided cannot stand.

The GOP is expected to pick up some seats in congress in the upcoming elections. They could possibly win the white house in 2012. If they don't it's still inevitable that they will eventually regain control of the white house as the cycle back and forth between two parties has been going on for well over a century.

I'm not going to blame Bush for anything at this point in time, but let's just bear in mind that, well, the 8 years before Obama weren't really any different in terms of deficit spending.

Considering all these facts, I find it utterly absurd that anyone would suggest seceding from the Union (again) just because they don't like a president who may well only be around for another 3 years, and 7 at most.

Yes, I would. The two ideologies are way too far apart. Plus the culture -- there's no need to force conservatives into living with multiculturalism which wipes out the traditional American culture. It's not right, it's not fair. But most importantly, I'm afraid of how much more the liberals will persecute the Christians. It's been done in history many times and their hatred and insults of Christians are totally acceptable by liberals. That's scary and that's what our original country was founded on.

If we don't split, someday pilgrims will have to go out yet again and found their own country just like the people who founded the USA and the Boers who founded their new life in South Africa and are being killed in the thousands right now. We need a new country to try the founding fathers dream again and this time demand states rights.

I wish for a bloodless split.

**I was quite aware that we see things differently before I answered. You're the one who calls everyone who disagrees with Obama a racist. Disgusting.

Secession of states is a real solution against the abuse of governing powers. Also, state banks like North Dakota should continue to proliferate against Wall St. It's the only means of successful independent survival for the civilian populace.

    Peaceful secession? Absolutely.

The Constitution is a contract between states and the federal government. If the federal government breaks that contract states have the right to secede.

EDIT- To elaborate: I meant that if the situations were very harsh then secession should be considered. I do NOT currently think any state should secede; Obama has not been tyrannical enough for any state to break away.

I think it's time to reconsider "states rights". We are either a union and a nation or we are not. Concepts of States rights have been used by our enemies to keep us at odds with ourselves.

Yes, I would support it. The federal government has become too large and ponderous, spending money they don't have and disregarding states rights. I would not only support secession but would move to any state that secedes.

Nah, I'll from time to time suggest that I'd enjoy it if the South seceded, but in honesty, it wouldn't be fair to people from the minority political ideologies in whatever states they were in, and could possibly cause issues for families from two states in two parts of the now-different countries

    Yes

It would be nice to let the Liberals and their massive never ending entitlements rot in the gutter.
