Should professional athletes be heavily taxed?

I think it's horrible how someone can be drafted straight out of high school or after attending some college and sign a multimillion dollar contract to play a sport while we have soldiers oversees that get shot at and are making less than min-wage on average. No matter how you cut it; it's wrong.

I don't think athletes should be taxed any more heavily than any one else. I think you are picking them out as if they should and of course in UK they are taxed the same as all of us. Any one who strikes it rich in a year all ready pays a higher percentage in tax. I am aware that the UK forces pay income tax on their earnings and even when overseas, whereas the US forces don't. I am told that the lowest wage a soldier can earn overseas, which includes allowances, is £20,255. This is above the minimum wage. A soldier selects his job as there is no longer National Service and so does an athlete - we tend to do the things we enjoy or at which we show some promise.

The thing is, most don't make multimillion dollar contracts. It seems that way because those are the ones you hear about.

But if you have any of the following things, you are part of it too.

    Been to any sports game,

watched any game on TV (you watched some of the ads, and I assume you went to McDonalds or something.

have any of those NFL Sunday Ticket or anything like that.

It isn't perfect, soldiers do not make enough money,

But since there isn't a draft right now, they are obviously not doing it for money or anything, because I feel a majority of jobs you could make more money.

but think about it, there are roughly 750 players in baseball. 307 million in the country

that comes out to be roughly 1 in 410,000.

You can't heavily tax one group.

I do not agree with it, but I wouldn't say it's wrong.

God Bless every soldier serving overseas

Athletes should be taxed just like everybody else. Soldiers get tax breaks on the money they earn while they're in a combat zone. Compared to the pay soldiers made 10-15 years ago, the US soldier makes pretty good money. It may not seem like much to you, but he has a place to live (free), he has food to eat (free), he has health care (free). He has a good disposable income compared to other young men his age working at other entry level jobs with no health insurance and paying rent.

Well in fairness all actors, singers, athletes, etc. should be taxed the highest rate but not any more. They shouldn't get paid nearly as much as they do and that's everyone's fault. They get rich because we'll pay $400 for front row seats to a game or $20 for a flippin CD with one hit single and 11 other moderately shitty songs. If we ever get real and boycott their ridiculous prices, then they wouldn't be making as much money.

Tickets to a game $, money wasted, bring the ticket price down, it will reduce over paid players and give a child a chance to watch a baseball game, without costing mom and dad a house payment.

I have been boycotting Professional Sports for almost 20 years over this issue. If you don't watch the games & buy the stuff, their pay will go down. As long as the general populace participates...I guess they will get huge sums of money. I don't advocate punitive taxes for anyone, however. If the market allows them to make the money, so be it. It's up to the individual whether or not to support this market.

If tax payers stop watching their sport--and buying their gear and going to their games- their salaries wouldn't be very high--

    so walk your talk--

I wouldn't spend five cents to go see some over paid--thug play a sport--most of them still carry their gun--and act the fool--regardless of how much money they make--they are way over paid--and don't deserve it.

I quite watching Tiger Woods--cause he's a fool---and not going to waste my $ or time on him anymore.

There is also the legal use of steroids prescribed by a doctor to remove inflamation. So probably all have used steroids at some time - but I think you just want those who used them illegally as a means of body building.

I think everyone should be taxed at the same percentage rate. I don't need the government in the middle wasting the tax money. I don't believe in socialism.
