At least $200 for just a basic enclosure since they need a LOT of water and decent filtration.. There are rescue groups that will pretty much give away red eared sliders if you have proof that you have a suitable enclosure.

Remember, while you can house a tiny baby in a ten gallon tank, it WILL grow fast and eventually need a large area. I believe bare minimum is around 100 gallons of water, but 200 gallons stays cleaner with good filtration..
In other words, your looking at a pond. If your in a northern climate, then it needs to be set up indoors.
Here are some photos of how to set up an indoor pond which is much cheaper then gradually buying bigger aquariums.

Hope that helps! If you do decide you want an aquatic turtle, please contact a rescue like the one above. They require the surrendering owner to pay for shipping it to you, so the distance shouldn't be a problem. AND you can save a turtle that really needs a good home..

Talking about turtles, there are many types of turtles that you can keep as a pet. I would recommend getting a red-ear slider if it's your first experience about turtles. Keeping red-ear slider is low in cost and doesn't require anything more than reading a few articles online. It will depend on where you live, if you have a garden in front of your house, what i would do is create a fence and make a pool for it. Right now, I can guarantee that this would work. In this case, you wouldn't need basking lamp because it gets its best light from the sun. But if you are thinking of keeping it indoor, you would need a tank, basking lamp/ UV-B Lamp, maybe a heater, depending on where you live. It eats nearly every thing. I've fed them from Japanese Crab Sticks to cat foods. You can also get some turtle food. I started off with about US$35.

i found my turtle, so it was free. At the pet store, turtles go for about $20. I already had a tank, but if you needed yo buy one, a 50 gallon aquarium would probably cost $100 used. But if your turtle is smaller, a 30 gallon could do, for about $50. Turtle food is relativley inexpensive.. only a few dollars. I just used a brick and a large rock for a basking region. My filter cost only $15, and the decorations only like $10. UV lightbulbs only cost about $5.

Well this is what I'd say is the approximate cost. It also depends on the size of turtle. My turtle is actually outgrowing everything from the basking platform to the tank itself. This is what I'm getting.
30 gallon tank: $66+
Turtle Topper ( basking platform that sits on top of the tank): $45-50 - I"m getting it off ebay
Filter: $35-50+
Clamp Lamp x2: $12-15
UVB bulb: $20+
House bulb for heat: maybe a few dollars.
My advice for cutting down on costs is to go to sites like ebay or amazon. They might be cheaper than chain stores like petco or petsmart. For tanks I found the one I want by searching on google and finding a small store.

Skip the decor; it's useless and takes up space. As for the rest, $300 if you go first cabin, half that id you get a used tank or a wading pool. A slab of wood is cheaper than a basking island. Food can be collected, bought from the market, or over-paid for at the pet shop. What you can't skimp on is the UV-B light (unless you feed lots of liver instead) and a good filter (unless you clean the tank frequently).
