My 1yr old throws fits during mealtime... what can I do to stop this behavior?
I am a single mother of a 1 year old son named Vaughn. Up until about 3 months ago Vaughn was like a little garbage disposal, sucking down every bottle and jar of baby food and begging for more. He often used to eat 12 ounces or more of baby food, plus snacks, juice, and a teething cookie in a single setting. Now I can barely get him to eat one 6 ounce jar of food. The problem is that he throws fits now. He will take a bottle fine, but I'm gradually trying to wean him, and I can't wean him if he won't eat big boy food. Today was much worse than before, it took him almost 2 hours to eat one jar of food because he kept screaming. I tried walking out of the room and coming back when he stopped fussing but he just started again as soon as I put the food in his mouth. I've also tried giving him different foods, letting him feed himself, giving him a spoon or cup to hold, singing songs, making entertaining special effects noises like the airplane and chew-chew-train, making silly faces and rhymes, delaying mealtime until he's really hungry (hoping that would prompt him to eat) and nothing seems to make him stop with the fit throwing. I know he's hungry, he just doesn't want to eat what I'm giving him.
How do I get him to stop screaming and just eat what I offer him?
FYI "Shondal Groom" my child is not spoiled. I make him eat all of his meal and don't give in to the screaming... giving in is spoiling. Since you're not a parent why don't you stay out of the parenting section of Y!A.
Linda R... thanks that is good advice and I plan to do so as soon as the doctor gives me the okay. My son has a neurological disorder that has stunted his growth so his doctor recommends I delay weaning for awhile. I want to have him weaned now but because of his delay in growth I have to wait. The bottles are a must for now.

Dont give in first of all....if he doesent want to eat the food that is givin to him then he doesent eat. my cousin does the same thing but shes 11....the parents would always give into her and if she dosnt like what my aunt cooks then she will throw a fit and my aunt will just cook whatever my cousin wants ....SO DO NOT GIVE INTO HIS FIT THROWING!!!

Since he is 1-year of age.....he should only be eating 'table food' (the same things you eat)...
He must also be weaned from the bottle....have him toss the bottles in the garbage and give him all liquids from a normal cup or glass.
I have 3 children and they were all eating table foods by 1-year of age and all drinking from normal cups and glasses.

Children are children, if he refuses to eat, don't feed him anything but that. It's not a problem until he just doesn't eat period.
In that case, you may want to consult a physician.
(I'm not a parent but I do know parents these days don't know parenting. Be the first, stop spoiling you child.)

I know how you feel - my 3 year old neighbour went through this phase..he's still is going through it from 1.5 years ago.
basically, he will eat when he's hungry..as long as he's getting fluids...
you may also need to start giving him vitamins. the gummy bear ones are great! "candy"
and its good for him, so you don't have to worry about him thinking medicine is candy..
good luck. i hope that helps !!!

this same thing happened to my nephew, he loved eating food but one day just stopped, and only wanted the bottle again, he would throw temper tantrums etc. whenever we tried to feed him. we just toned down on the food and gave him more bottle, he still through tantrums, but we struggled through it.
hope this helped. :/
