What is the actual Christian doctrine on the afterlife?

I'm not a Christian and I'm not a Richard Dawkins style hardcore atheist, I'm just curious about this.

I mean, from watching TV shows and hearing things from those around me as I grew up, I thought it was clear Christian thought that when you die you go to Heaven or Hell depending on whether you were bad or good, and that was it. Then I started hearing about the Resurrection of the Dead, Judgement Day, and it all got very confusing and convoluted.

I understand that there will be differences between the thinking of different denominations, but is there a vague outline of what Christians believe happens after death that suits most denominations?

Thanks.

This probably won't suit most denominations, but it's what the Bible says.

Ecclesiastes 5:9 "For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead they are conscious of nothing at all." In Genesis God states that death is a punishment for disobedience, not a way to reward people with a heavenly resurrection or banishment to eternal torment. The punishment for sin is death, not hell. Since after Adam sinned all were born imperfect, we all die, which is why Jesus came. To pay the price or be the 'ransom' for the human race so we can receive a resurrection to a paradise earth. The earth Jehovah created in the first place, his original plan hasn't changed.

True some humans will be resurrected to a heavenly life but they are a tiny minority and they serve a specific function in heaven. As stated in 2 Timothy 2:12 "if we go on enduring together we shall also rule as kings..." This is referred to in the book of Revelation as the first resurrection. Revelation 20: 5,6 says: (The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended) This is the first resurrection. Happy and holy is anyone having part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no authority, but they will be priests of God and of the Christ, and will rule as kings with him for the thousand years." Who will they rule over and what will be the future of the earth? The rest of Revelation chapter 20 and 21 make it clear.

Not all Christians believe in the same thing. Most believe in heaven and hell, but they disagree about what those words mean. They also disagree on whether resurrection is literal or if it just refers to individuality continuing after death, and they disagree on whether heaven and hell are immediate after death or if you go to sleep first. Some believe most that go to heaven first have to go through purgatory.

If there is one thing that is common for Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and most Protestants, it is the Nicene Creed. I think it refers to judgement, resurrection of the body, and life everlasting, but leaves a lot of details up to interpretation.

Romans: 3-5 If our unrighteousness brings out God's righteouseness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument). 3-6 Certainly not! if that were so, how could God judge the world?

Judgment Days would start, Only after these things happened.

    (1) Natural disasters were the work of mankind hands.

    (2) Isarel returned to Jerusalem

    (3) The Third Temple

    (4) The men of Nineveh stand up (They suffered horrible persecutions)

    (5) 144000 sealed ones (They suffered horrible persecutions)

    (6) The Queen of the South Rise (She suffered horrible persecutions)

    (7) The two witnesses

  • Resurrection of the dead at Judgment Day was the original doctrine, since it was thought to be immanent. Some Christians still believe in this. But most mainline churches have adopted the idea of personal judgment after death, sometimes connected with the idea that the soul will be reunited with a reconstructed and now biologically immortal body after the end of the world.

ppl do go to heaven or hell after death but its not as soon as they die. its really at the end of time. until then the good people's spirit are in a room/world right beloe heaven thats just as peaceful or watever but they arent in heaven with God and Jesus yet.

the bad people are in a bad room/world of torment but its nt as bad as hw hell is going to be. they are begging God to come back to earth to tell their loved ones how tormentuous it is and to accept Christ but they cant.

when God is ready to end time, some poeple will stil be alive so their spirit will lv them and they'l join God and also the spirits that were gd humans willl be there at the big reunion (thats the resurection of dead rite there) and well the evil will be cast into damnation.

then their will be a grand fair in heaven for about a thousand years (time ends so its jus average i guess) and then there will be a judgement where the people who werent in heaven will stand before God.

so some of them jus didnt accept him and some were generally evil, the poeple in heaven will be judges with God and they will judge them. some that didnt accept him but gave a glass of water too someone on earth or took in an orphan will be granted the liberty of living in heaven and the genuinely evil people will be damed for eternity.

That certain christian sects/certain christians within the church go to heaven and everyone else doesnt.

Most of them believe that belief in Jesus is the ONLY way to heaven, and deeds dont mean anything if you dont believe in Jesus. I dont like this approach, because it shows that they dont care about helping others.

There is no clear belief pattern in Judgement day, Rapture, etc because most christians are in conflict with each other.

I dont believe in christianity, I am a Pagan Agnostic, but I was a christian for awhile. (not proud of it either)

There is no one doctrine and the different denominations of christianity continue to bicker about who is wrong or right about the afterlife.

Life after death...salvation thru Jesus christ...and not death without him.

    God loves you.....god bless

Most of it has been pieced together from medieval mythology.
