new to gardening stuff, where do i start?

we just moved into a new house, and it came with flower beds. im currently in the process of pulling out all the dead stuff and trash left behind. after i get it cleared out, what do you do first? do i need to put down soil and wait, or add some kind of fertilizer, or what? i have a brown thumb, so i asked my neighabor what to plant for the area and we are going to the plant shop in a few days. is there anything i need to do to prep for plants? thanks for any info you can give me.

If the flower beds have good soil in them, you will probably just have to loosen it up a little bit before you plant. You can loosen you soil either by hand with a digging fork or shovel or with a rototiller.

Then you might want to add some compost to the soil in order to help make sure that your new plants will have the nutrients that they need. Other than that, just make sure you have a good watering can or a hose with a gently nozzle so that you can keep you new plants watered.

Hope this help a little. Good luck!

You may want to put top soil in them, if you think the soil looks bad or you want to give yourself a better chance of growing a good flower bed. Ever green (pine like plant) they need little attention and are always green.
