On June 6, 1944, no fewer than 4000 ships landed 133,000 assault troops on the beaches of Normandy. A further 23,000 parachuted in, whilst Allied aircraft flew 14,000 sorties on that historic day. By the end of August 200,000 seamen had transported two million troops across to France. It was the greatest and most successful military invasion in history, which led to the downfall of Hitlers Germany, and the end of the war in Europe.

Key to its success and at the heart of the invasion were the Landings of the British 50th division on 'Gold' beach and the Canadian 3rd Division on 'Juno' beach. They provided a vital link between the landings of the British 3rd Division on 'Sword' beach and the Americans on Omaha and Utah beaches. They were also crucial in securing the beachhead and the drive inland to Bayeux and Caen.

Alexander the Great's invasion and conquest of the Persian empire.

Despite being vastly outnumbered,Alexander consistently defeated the Persians and took over their huge empire in just 4 years.

The impact was the Hellenistic world, a multicultural fusion of Classical Greece and western Asia that flourished for nearly 300 years before the last of its kingdoms came under Roman control - an empire profoundly influenced itself by Greek culture, and the basis of modern western culture and civilization.

The most successful invasion in history was Genghis Khan, it began in 1213 when the Mongols poured through the Great Wall and conquered Northern China north of the Yellow River. They then moved west causing confusion in Europe. In 1220 the invaded what is now Iran and killed most of the inhabitants and spared not even the dogs and cats. Three years later they extended their empire all the way to the Indus River. They always took more horses than men with them so each soldier had a fresh horse every day. Much of the empire's government was made up of Christians. Jews, and Muslims. He died in 1227, but his empire moved on capturing the Russian cities of Kiev and Moscow. In 1241 they spread through Poland taking everything east of the Danube and invaded Croatia. They even carried collapsible boats to cross rivers that stopped many other armies.

The Landings at Normandy are often among the most popularized, though it is far from the most climatic or decisive offensive in history. Indeed, the other Anglo/American campaigns in Italy and North Africa are often forgotten, and even the direct defeat of Germany by Soviet forces remains a much avoided topic despite its outcome. Whereas operations in Normandy liberated France, the Red Army offensive in Germany did nothing less than wipe the Third Reich off the face of the Earth.

Admittedly, the largest invasion in history was that of Operation Barbarossa. It also has the distinction of being among the most disastrous. After the Wehrmacht's poorly planned thrust into Russia failed, it is only appropriate that the Red Army's counterattack into Germany was the second largest invasion in recorded history. Not only was the Soviet military better equipped than the increasingly desperate German military (in spite of popular stereotypes), but it also had the manpower and weight of thousands upon thousands of operational tanks. The elements of industrial strength and sheer mass were potent when mixed with a longing for revenge, and the maddening drive to destroy the Third Reich was as indiscriminate as it was overwhelmingly successful.

The frenzied sprint through Eastern Europe and into the German homeland was not simply high in human cost, but it also spelled the very end of the European fascists. It was in a bunker during the Battle for Berlin that Adolf Hitler took his life, and it was against the endless tide of Russian armor that the Heer was broken. The landings at Normandy, while important, where nonetheless dwarfed by the sheer size of the Soviet campaign into Germany.

For some context, the dramatic Siege of Berlin was host to more than two and a half million Soviet soldiers alone. That is more than ten times the amount of all Allied soldiers who participated in the Normandy beach landings. The earlier Siege of Stalingrad alone saw more than one million dead Russians, with combined German losses making it among the bloodiest battles of all time. Additionally, nearly twenty-four million Russians alone died in total during the war. A bit less than four and a half thousand Americans perished during the entire conflict.

Hernan Cortes' conquest of the Aztec Empire

Francisco Pizzaro's conquest of the Incan Empire

The conquistadors conquered enormously valuable lands and killed off enormous populations with very few soldiers and through the use of guile, diplomacy, deceit, military skill, effective use of technological advances, and best of all the biological weapons of small pox, chicken pox, and measles.

The current ruling classes of most central and south American countries are still made up of the descendants of European invaders.

Well it all depends who you ask... But if we speak in military and US/World history the Greatest and most successful military invasion was of course D-Day and the invasion of Normandy, France on June 6th, 1944. France was occupied by Germany and D-Day represented the beginning of the end of Hitler spreading his hatred and Nazi doctrine all over Europe.
