Changing the name of the "snooker and pool" category?

I think it would be simpler to change the name of the "snooker and pool" category to "billiards". The term billiards refers to all cue sports, from carom games, to snooker, to pool, etc. I know a lot of people only like to use the term to refer to carom games, but it really is a catchall term. Would you be in support of a name change?

Update:

I see where this is going. If this seems to be the consensus after a few days, perhaps we could petition Yahoo to change the title. I'd like to see what a few of the other folks think first.

Update 2:

I have to wonder, if someone seriously hasn't even heard of the term "billiards" do I really expect much of a question or answer out of them? I suppose maybe this sounds elitist, which I most definitely am not, but do we really need any more people asking questions that can be found all over the internet with a few keystrokes? I think this category should be more about people's opinions and less about facts that can be found elsewhere. I'm tired of all of the "is this a legal shot" or "who wins in this situation" questions. I'm tired of the "what are pool balls made of" questions. And most of all, I'm tired of the "swimming pool" questions. That's why I want to get rid of "pool" in the category title.

I think "billiards" would be the correct name category for this Yahoo groups needs, given that most people type in pool in the search engine and then ask their question(s) about what chemicals to use for their "pool".

Snooker is a very specific term which would be included in the term billiards, since that name is all encompassing for virtually any game played on a pool table.

    That's my humble opinion.

I think it could be argued that a much larger portion of the English speaking population does not know what "billiards" means than do not know what either "pool" or "snooker" means. Evidence of that could be the frequency of the question "What is billiards?" in this very section. It really does not serve anyone to change the name of the section to a word a significant portion of the target audience does not know.

Besides, the only games that could be excluded with the terms "pool" and "snooker" are games played on a carom table, and any of those games can also be called "carom pool." So really, you're not excluding anything by calling the section "snooker and pool."

I'm going to jump in at the deep end here! *cringe*

I am from the UK originally and "billiards" is not a well-known term except with the elderly. Billiards used to be played regularly but snooker became the more popular social and professional game since the 40's.

Most people worldwide*** are familiar with the more common terms "snooker" and "pool" and categorising the section as "billiards" would result in many questions not being posted.

The whole premise behind Y!A is to answer questions, so keep the section as "Snooker & Pool", so that the less familiar get their answers.

*** I have traveled most of the globe and the last 12 years have been spent all over Asia. The only country that I have found is familiar with "billiards" is the Philippines - where I currently reside - and that is presumably due to the US occupation.

EDIT: You really are on a crusade aren't you!

Since when were you voted to decide whether a question or answer is worthy or not enough to be on Y!A?

I expect you were born with a cue in your hand and knew everything from nap, deflection, throw, ball materials since the game's inception, etc.... PLEASE INFORM ALL OF US WHAT LEVEL OUR QUESTIONS SHOULD START AT ("i'm not elitist" - hahahaha)

Around the world "billiards" is not as well known a term as "snooker and pool", so it only makes sense to have a category that the MAJORITY OF THE WORLD can reference more swiftly.

Additionally, every section has a misplaced question problem, so by changing to billiards would not stop that. The Formula 1 section gets a large number of baby milk formula questions, but I just choose to ignore them, not dwell on other people's lack of attention - just relax, it'll help your game.

Lastly, the internet is full of factually incorrect articles, so Y!A is the perfect place for people with limited knowledge to post questions and get clear, concise, factually correct and exemplary answers from such wizened and well-read scholars of the game as yourself!

I agree... Generally Billiard now refer to all cue sports as you say. But in the primitive times Billiard refers to pocketless cue sport which is now called Three Cushion Billiard. I believe that Snooker is the first cue sport with pocket.
