  • Hypothetical tax question?

Two people are living together in a long term, committed relationship and are not married. They are considering getting married for the tax benefits. They live in Nevada where there are not state or local income taxes, only federal. One makes $400,0000 a year, the other makes $50,000 a year. Would it be most financially beneficial to stay unmarried and file as two single people, get married and file jointly, or get married and file separately? Why?

  • low pressure on hot side of new kitchen faucet?

So I bought the faucet in the link below and installed it myself. Everything went smoothly, I followed all directions.

The problem is it has about half the pressure on the hot side as the cold side.

I switched the lead lines on the hot and cold, and the hot side (on the faucet, which is now actually cold water) was still the side with low pressure. This tells me that the water pressure from the wall is fine, and that the lead lines themselves are not clogged (I think).

I then pulled off the handle and cartridge (see second link below for parts diagram). I did not see any obvious clogs in the cartridge, but when I blew air throw the end of the sprayer, a piece of black plastic-y crude came out. I thought this had fixed it, so I re-assembled the faucet, switched the leads lines to the correct sides, and tried again. The cold worked fine again, then when I turned on the hot, it seemed to work correctly for a half a second, then sputtered air, and was right back to the same low pressure.

This is very frustrating because I had purchased the faucet once and it had fine cold water pressure and NO hot water pressure at all, so I just took it off and exchanged it at the store. I REALLY don't want to do that again for a second faucet with essentially the same problem.

    Thank you for your suggestions.

  • Wall outlet got wet and tripped breaker, but now smells?

So, I had a minor plumbing catastrophe and long story short, an outlet on our kitchen island that I had an extension cord with a light on it got wet and tripped the breaker. There is now an odor in the kitchen, like something electric blew up. I did not see any smoke or anything, and when the light and extension cord dried out I plugged it into another outlet and it still works.

I have not yet turned the breaker back on and would like to know if something else is likely fried, and how I would go about checking if it's the outlet or something. I pulled off the outlet cover and it wasn't black or anything (like it blew up or whatever), but I didn't actually detach and pull out the plug. There's also a dishwasher and garbage disposal plugged in near where the water was leaking, but I assumed those things have some other safeguards since they have a higher potential of getting wet than other appliances (maybe I'm wrong?).

Anyway, let me know what you think I should do. And don't say call an electrician.

  • Are my records going to melt?

My uncle recently passed away and my aunt knew how much I love music and specifically the music that he listened to, and has offered to give me his entire record collection. There are a about 500 records. He started buying new (mostly rock) albums as a teenager in the mid-60s and continued to buy albums right up until they started making cassette tapes, so as you can imagine, there are quite a few amazing records and he kept them in pristine condition.

Here's the thing: I currently live in Las Vegas. During the day when my wife and I are at work, I basically turn the AC off to save money and turn in back on just before we come home. So during the day, the temperature in the house can get up to 89 degrees (that's where the thermostat is actually set) pretty much the entire summer.

I'm wondering if this temperature will ruin the albums. I'm not going to sell the collection no matter what, but I'm thinking that maybe I should leave them with my mother (in Ohio) rather than bring them here. Or at least keep the nicer albums at her house and only bring the ones that are already heavily played or generally worn that I am going to use.

    What do you think?

  • Question for people who know about traffic generation software and/or services?

I've ordered traffic for my website from a couple of different people on fiverr. The two people were clearly unrelated and not affiliated with each other, but were using the same service (although through different web addresses) to track and show my traffic. I know this because they each tried to create an account for me with the same username, but the password the second person gave me did not work and I could login with the password given by the first person, and my info for the first site was shown.

Anyway, I'd like to know what program and/or web service they are using so that I could cut out the middleman and get traffic to my website more cheaply. Here are the two websites they sent me to to track my traffic:

  • Do you let off the gas completely when changing gears?

A buddy of mine taught me to drive a manual a long time ago but I never ended up buying a car with a manual so I never really learned completely. Anyway, I'm looking at cars with manual transmissions again so I've been watching how-to videos and what not. Here's the thing:

Every video I've watched says you need to come off the gas completely when changing gears. When I learned from my friend, I definitely did NOT do this, yet I was easily making good, smooth shifts between gears. I let the gas off some, but definitely not completely. I even remember him saying that the thing he had the most trouble with was upshifting while the car was moving and he was surprised at how easily I was picking it up. My biggest problem area was launching the car smoothly, but upshifting seemed very easy.

So which is it? Do you need to completely let off the gas or not?

The car I learned in was a Civic, and I'm currently looking at the Subaru BRZ (200hp, 6 speed), Nissan 350z (250+hp, 5 or 6 speed) or similar, if any of that matters.

    Thanks!

  • why can't I completely remove Firefox?

There's some sort of virus/trojan/malware/whatever screwing up Firefox and hijacking my yahoo search results. Anyway, I'm trying to get rid of it (to no avail) and want to try completely remove all remnants of Firefox and then reinstalling it. The problem is, every time I uninstall, restart, and delete the Firefox files I can find, then reinstalling Firefox, it still knows all of my bookmarks, history, saved passwords, etc. Clearly everything is not getting wiped. What am I doing wrong? Can someone talk me through EVERYTHING I need to find and delete to completely remove Firefox? I am in Windows XP.

    Thanks.

  • Laney guitar speaker cabinet help?

So they have this speaker cab that's been sitting at a nearby pawn shop for awhile and I was wondering if someone could help me figure out exactly what it was. It seems like a really good deal, but I'd at least like to know what it is before I buy it.

Anyway, the tag says "Laney OD GS 412 120W"

It's a bit beat up, and the serial number, model number, and ohm rating (that look to have been written on in pen) have worn off.

It's a back loaded, closed back, slant cab with a tolex grill. It's kind of beat up (definitely has significant stage time) and looks fairly old, but not really vintage. It does say Made in the UK (I don't know if they have lower end models made in China or anything).

Laney currently sells a couple of models labeled "GS412" but they all are rated much higher than 120W. I suppose someone could have switched out the speakers, but I can't say for sure. I haven't asked them if they'll open up the back yet, as I'd like to at least have an idea what I'm looking at before I start poking around too seriously.

The price it's marked is $180, which is why I'm weary that it might be some low end model that I can't find and they don't make anymore.

Any info on this model, it's original cost or what it should be worth in fair condition would be appreciated.

    Thanks for the help.

  • Name some classic rock bands that use a lot of fuzz?

Name me some bands from the 60s and 70s that used a lot of fuzz in their music. If they don't use it in "most" if their songs, list some specific tracks where they use it. Biggest list with least obvious choices (in other words, don't just say Jimi Hendrix) gets best answer.

    Thanks in advance.

  • intense 90 day workout DVD commercial?

I've seen a commercial on TV a couple of times for an intense 90 day workout video which looked like a ripoff of P90x and/or Insanity that was only $19.99 but cannot remember the website.

If anyone has seen the commercial and knows the website it directed you to, I would appreciate it.

    Thanks.

  • Desktop loads slowly or not at all?

    Using Windows XP.

When I turn on the computer and get to the blue screen where you select which user to use, if I select one too quickly, the background will come up, but the icons and start bar will come up extremely slowly, or not at all. Lately, it's been doing the same thing even if I wait a minute after the blue screen comes up.

I already ran my anti-virus software, and that is not the problem. Any suggestions?

  • Adjusting computer for best performance after adding memory?

I just upgraded my desktop from 256MB of memory to 2 GB. I was wondering if there were any adjustments I should make to the computer's settings to maximize it's performance. I've noticed that programs boot up much quicker and run better in general, but when I bring up the task manager, under the "performance" tab it says my CPU usage is still at 100% quite often. If this a function of the memory not being allocated properly somehow, or me just running programs that are a little too heavy duty for my cheap little computer?

My computer is a Dell Dimension with a 2.5GHz Celeron processor running Windows XP, if that helps.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Best resources RE: learning about investing?

I'm looking into putting some money into the market and I'd like to do it myself. Not looking for anything particular just yet, so everything is on the table. Long term, short term, stocks, bonds, options, say trading, etc, etc.

I'm mainly looking for book titles, but if there are some (non-scam) websites that would work too. College level textbooks are fine, I'll work my way up to that. Just show me the most informative, and/or most helpful information you know of.

    Thanks

  • USB Wireless adapter says there is internet connection, but cannot access internet?

A friend of mine has a Netgear USB wireless adapter on their desktop (running Windows XP). The Netgear software says there is a connection to the internet (via her wireless router), and the icon in the bottom right of the screen says there is an internet connection, but when she tries to run Explorer or anything else using the internet, it says there is no connection. There is another computer (with Windows 7) connected to the internet via a direct cable through the router, and it works fine.

Anyone know what the problem could be? Is there a good website that could help me with this problem?
