2001 A space Odyssey?

What is the ending of this movie all about? After Dave arrives at Jupiter he sees multicolored lights flashing by, then sees himself at several stages of life older than current. Then we see the monolith and a huge fetus floating above the earth? What's up with that?

The end is open to different interpretations. I guess it means that the further we go out into the unknown outer space, the more bizarre the things we discover get. Here space and time is twisted, and humankind outgrows machines, and the aliens tranform him into a Star Child... I kinda lost myself, but anyway...

If you want anything further, maybe you should read Arthur C. Clarke's book 2001: A Space Odyssey. Maybe that'll explain it better (I read it a long time ago). Or read Roger Ebert's essay and review for it.

Who knows? Are we seeing the birth of a new God? I think 2001 has to be the most overrated movie of all time (but I think all Kubrick's movies are overrated. Except for Dr. Strangelove).

    He becomes the Starchild.

In the books it goes into further detail, the movie is more open to interpretation.

also, to the guy below how are Kubrick's works overrated, is it because you personally don't care for them or what.
