How much will I need for a week in Jamaica?

My bf and I are leaving for Montego bay in 20 days :D The price of our trip includes, transportation to and from the resort, 3 meals a day, drinks, tax and gratuities. How much will we need if we decide on any excursions and other small things? I was thinking about $600 each, will that be enough?

  • So I'm a quite miserly so that would be more than enough. You will want to spend two of your days enjoying the resort facilities and since it is all inclusive it will have quite a bit. You should do at least two escursions, green grotto is a good one, there are so many. Please take half a day to go to the market and have some of the inseason fruits fresh, if you are gonna get your hair done go to one of the local hairdressers, the ones on property are not as good and overpriced, if you go to the market you can find one in there. There is Marguerita Ville, Coral Cliff and Bluenote which provide clubbing, Live music, and jazz. Then there are the shops. Try to get a guide that drives to go on a trip along the south coast. Holland bambo is good and the road side food is heaven. Go to the country and hang out with a jamaican family and see what life is like day to day that will be fun. And go to church, a huge part of Jamaica is it's relgious culture, a church visit can be an experience in itself and escursion even. All that should not cost more than US$600. Find me when you get here and I'll get you hooked up.

If you plan on doing local excursions and activities then budget $150 per person/day if you plan your trip/tour/activity through the resort (which you will probably do). It's always more expensive to go through the resort for activities rather than go it on you're own via private taxi. If you are taking trips and tours that originate in areas such as Negril or Ocho Rios (Ochi) then I would consider $200 per person/day to account for the trip and (most likely) a private taxi or shuttle to you're destination which will be a short 1 1/2 hour drive from MoBay. For instance, Dunns River Falls, the zipline, Mystic Mountain, etc.. are all in Ochi so you will have to take a road trip to get to them. It's usually an all day trip if you go to Ochi or Negril from MoBay. Also, if you plan on being out and about in JA then it would be a good thing to get familiar with the exchange rate and carry some $JMD around instead of $US. Though $US is taken pretty much everywhere in JA, it's wise to be on the level. $1US = roughly $86 JMD so be aware of that if you choose not to change your $US for $JMD. If you have more questions feel free to e-mail me. ONE LOVE.

Lisa, thats about right. That is what we bring if we decide to take a couple of excursions. If you stay at the resort and do their included activities you only need a little spending money.
