My PC's monitor blacks out sometimes: How do I know if it is the PC or the monitor that is not working?
Okay, here's the whole story:
(1) the hard drive is really old (~9 years)
(2) the rest of the CPU is even older (~10 years)
(3) the monitor is a flat-screen monitor -- at least 7 years old
When I tried to boot up the PC just now, the monitor blacked out for a few minutes, then come back on, then blacked out for another couple of minutes, then come back on: This went out for about 10 minutes but as I type this, it is "on." Sometimes the monitor's power light stays on, sometimes it fades from green to orange when it blacks out.
My husband thinks it's the hard drive giving out because it is so old but it's not throwing up any error messages. I realize if I had another monitor, I could plug that one in and test the CPU but I do not have access to another monitor (except for the laptop I am using right now but I do not know how to use it just as a monitor). This sort of behavior from the monitor/PC has been going on for the past 4 - 5 days. And it is not only when we boot it up; sometimes it occurs while we are using it.
Any help/advice/thoughts be tremendously appreciated.

1. The HD is probably fine.
2. The computer is booting so the CPU is probably okay
3. Flat screens are nice.
4. I'm assuming the computer is as old as the computer which appears to be 9 years. It is probably the VIDEO CARD giving out. Every computer has a Built in Video card ( connects sideways on the upper back part of the computer )
Or if you have an actual video card it will be towards the very bottom of your computer. Try using the Other video card.
If you have a friend with a laptop or something have them come over and hook there laptop up to the monitor to see if it does the same thing. But from your post if the monitor light goes from green to orange and the screen blacks out its loosing its source signal which tells me Video card...
Time for a new video card... if its on the motherboard its time for a new computer. Hope this helps.

Im no longer probable confident yet something graphically has to do with photograph playing cards perhaps your computing device has a nap mode timer i be attentive to mine when I hit it into sleep you're able to attend approximately 2-4 minutes for it to come back lower back on out of your hitting the keyboard or mouses (probable to stop you acidentally hitting it on whilst your leaving the computing device) yet different than that the only time my computing device has ever went black is whilst my photos motive force crashed for a 2d or 2.
