Tips for Interrail Travel?

Hello!

Next week I'll be going to Prague to start my interrail travel, and I'm wondering if any experienced travellers have any good tips for me!? I've been backpacking before, but not interrail and not in Europe, so I'm a bit unsure what to expect! I'll be travelling Prague-Austria-Slovenia-Croatia-Italy (Cro-Italy by boat).

Any tips about packing, travelling, warnings and do- and don't's would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You can use your interrail pass as a hop-on, hop-off ticket on trains that do not require any reservations - the regional trains don't accept any reservations. However, on many fast trains, international trains and night trains reservations are mandatory and must be purchased prior to getting on the train. There's a fine if you don't do this. You can buy the reservation at a ticket window, at one of the ticket machines, or sometimes on-line (Italy). Since you have a pass, you only need to pay for the seat reservation. You fill out the travel report that comes with the pass. The conductor may or may not ask to see it. They could fine you if it hasn't been filled in for the train you're on, but that won't necessarily happen every time. I've seen them just tell people here to fill it in and they often don't even look at that. You also fill in the travel dates on the pass when you use it - this is mandatory and you will most likely be fined if you haven't done it.

There is an excellent website that can provide much more information on buying and using train passes than there is room for in this answer: http://www.seat61.com/ . Information on the interrail pass is here: http://www.seat61.com/InterRail.htm . This provides information on the supplements you have to pay on various trains in the various countries and there are links to the national train websites where you can find schedules.

Prague is one of many cities worth-visit and to achieve that you can start planning your vacation with hotelbye . Starting with the charming place round the Prague Castle or the Strahov monastery with its amazing library and end with …the whole marvelous town, Prague is simply incredible. In Prague you can even visit the little home where Franz Kafka worked or the lovely Prague Castle gardens from where you are able to like a special see of the city with its picturesque red roofs. In that town you will never get bored. In the event that you should go during the spring you will see the spring trees in bloom; in summer time you will see extended dusks; fall provides you with colorful leaves and unique light and in the wintertime you will like the complete town protected with simple white snow.
