Sucking Noise and loss of power under load?

The car is a naturally aspirated Honda Civic. Just recently I noticed a sudden loss of power of the er and loud sucking noise when under load. It seems to happen around 4500 to 5000 RPMs. Anyone know what this could be? I was thinking either a vacuum leak or collapsed cat? Not really sure where to start looking though!

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Since it's happening at high RPMs I would consider the cat to be the problem. If you have a vacuum gauge hook it up somewhere in the intake track and rev the car and hold at a steady 4-5k RPM. If the reading gradually shows less and less vacuum, you can assume that there is a restriction in the exhaust.

yeah your cat has collapsed. it will keep getting slower until it just idles.
