What would cause a child's hair to turn a different color at the tips of her hair?

My answer is not backed by anything medical, but I believe the hair follicle becomes less dense at the ends (where the hair is the oldest). The sun bleaches this part easier and the color may fade like you stated. I have a 9 year old and in the summer her hair does the same thing. Also if they swim alot the color can fade because of the chemicals.

If she is spending any time at all in the sun it will cause it to change. Also, as they get older it changes on its own as well. When I was little I was pure blonde until I was about 3 then it slowly started to darken, Now I'm a total brunette! My (almost) 2 year old daughter was born with jet black hair and now it is a light brown with beautiful high and low lights. My (almost) 1 year old was born a blonde and now is turning more of a strawberry blonde. As for the medical reason on why it does it, I can't tell you.
