Your program selector is knackered, mine went the same way.Either buy a new selector or if the machine is really old ,just get a new machine. If you do get a new switch make a note of where the wires go before you disconnect them ,there's quiet a lot of them.Good luck

On every washing machine we've ever had (quite a few over the years) the dial clicks round as it's washing, you just set the start point by turning the selector to a programme and then it clicks round usually ending with 'spin' or whatever is the appropriate end for the programme you selected.

the control switch it's self sounds to be bad...
i would tell you how to replace but i'm not familiar with your models construction.
do a quick search for "how to replace control switch" for your model of washer, go to your local appliance parts dealer and get the part, it should not be very expensive, $20 to 40.00, somewhere in that area, make sure you unplug or turn off breaker to the washer and just replace.
this is an easy project for DIY
hope this helps
