1994 Jeep Cherokee fuel pump?
I just bought a 1994 Jeep Cherokee (used) from a car lot two weeks ago. The other day it died in the middle of a highway during rush hour traffic. After I managed to get it towed to a auto shop, they said it was my fuel pump and would cost a lot to get fixed. Money we do not have. My question is: Is it possible that the person who sold me the car knew about the fuel pump being faulty? If so, what actions could I take?

The fuel pump in the Cherokees is pretty easy to get to. You do not have to jack up the vehicle or drop the tank. It is on the front side of the tank and can be changed pretty quickly by laying under the XJ with a few hand tools.

Jeep never had a fuel reset switch only Ford used them. Before you just buy a pump and throw it in spend some time checking things out. Check for powers and grounds to the fuel pump. Believe its not that hard to do on a jeep (long time since I've done one) Get the wiring diagram and see whats what at the pump and test it. It could be something else bad ground bad relay broken wiring or how knows what test before replacing parts could save you a ton of money Good luck hope I helped GM tech for 15 years

My 1997 Jeep grand cherokee did the same exact thing to me. Everyone was telling me that it was the fuel pump too. But because I was afraid of dropping the tank I tried to figure out what else it could be. I went and bought a crank shaft sensor which is located under the hood and more accessible than the fuel pump. And a lot cheaper. And lucky for me, that is what was wrong. I would try getting the crank shaft sensor changed before you throw down more than you have to on a fuel pump.
Good Luck!

changed out the fuel pump on my 94 grand cherokee V-8. it took about 2 hour to do. the fuel pump will run anywhere form 120 and 150 dollars depending where you go. this is how i did it
1) remove as much fuel as you can. this will make is light.
2) using a floor jack and a flat piece of plywood take the load off the tank straps.
3) loosen the 2 nuts on the forward side of the straps and remove them.
4) with the tank being supported by the jack remove the straps.
5) lower the tank. you will have to set the tank on the ground.
6) remove the fuel pump. prior to removing the tank make sure to disconnect all the fuel lines to the tank
7) install new pump and re-install the tank making sure to re-attach the fuel lines prior to re-install.
have a haynes or motor repair manual nearby for reference.
good luck

If he ran it out of gas, he probably fried the pump...newer vehicles with the pumps in the gas tank should never be run dry because they need the fuel to cool them...when you run the tank dry, the pump over-revs and heats up and will stop working. Only way to check is to find the wire harness going to the tank for the pump and test the wires to see if you're getting power to the pump or not. Make sure you have a good ground connection with the ground wire in the harness and test for power on the power wire...if power is there with ignition on, the pump is bad. Sorry for your trouble, Paul

No there is no way they knew that the fuel pump was bad. It's just one of those things that randomly goes bad. It's in the fuel tank so it's not like they could have done something to it.
