Does this count as volunteer work?
I have been involved in community theater for 4 years. I have worked backstage, as a dresser, helped with props, lights, and I was also a sound technician 3 times. I have also been on stage once. Does that count as volunteer work? I want to make sure before I put it on a college application. Thanks!

yes that counts. don't listen to the first guy who said it was an extracurricular. It's volunteer work if you didn't receive any compensation

That definatley counts as volunteer work - it shows that a) you know roughly what your doing, and b) that you are willing to give most things a try and are not a 'one trick pony'.
Depending on what your college course is, experience seems to count for more-or-less EVERYTHING these days, when applying for a college course in technical theatre and getting a job in the industry.
Also, putting that type of thing on your CV goes down really well with an employer - I'm not old enough to have a job yet (2 days to go!!) - but ALL of the theatre technicians and people within the Theatre industry have suggested that I get AS MUCH EXPERIENCE AS POSSIBLE making me much more employable than someone who has done one show for example.
Anyway, back on topic, it counts as volunteer work if you have not been paid for it. Ignore what it says about being extra-curricular, that would only count if these shows were at a school or as part of a club etc.
Good luck with the college application,
hope this helps

I take it you're doing all this for free?
If so, yes, it's "volunteer" work, but generally we think of such work in the context of benefiting people (or creatures, if you're working with animals) who are at some disadvantage that you can help to alleviate.
Still, this is a community theater, and anything you do that benefits a community (and that you do for free) could count as "community service." The problem is that this is entertainment that crosses the boundary between a fun, non-school-related activity and volunteer service.
I'd put it under activities and come up with something else that makes you look civic-minded, altruistic, selfless, and generous to people less fortunate than you are.
By the way, you don't absolutely HAVE to have volunteer work on your record. If you're doing other interesting things, it's not a requirement.

I agree with your dad. The purpose of HS volunteer programs are to take students out of their comfort zones and expose them to different environments and working conditions that exist in the community. While what you suggest is volunteer work, your being a manager for your coach, at your school with people you already know, doesn't fulfill the purpose of the volunteer programs.

Thats more of an extracirricular activity than a volunteering assignment
