What is the importance of the mileage in a car?
So, it's time for me to be looking for a new car. My boss, who I have also been friends with for the last three years, in selling her car and I'm interested in buying it. It's a 2003 Ford Escape XLT, and it's a really nice looking car. She doesn't have any problems with it for the moment, but she does have 116,000 miles on it. Most of these miles are highway miles, since she drives quite a bit of ways to work.
She's selling the car for $8,000 and after doing some research, a lot of the vehicles I've been finding online are comparable prices and comparable miles.
As you can probably tell, I'm trying to be optamistic. She gets her oil changed regularly, and kept it in good condition for sure. However, is $8,000 to much to pay for all the miles that are on it? Just how important is the amount of miles to a car, even if you had it checked regularly?
Let me have it.

Hey, according to what my relatives say, the lower the mileage, the better the engine is on the car.
For example, no matter how much you spent to keep it looking tip-top shape, you can't change the engine (unless you really want to, which may cost lots!). So, driving more can wear the car out - which is obviously bad-.
I'd say $8,000 is too much for a car that has run 116,000 miles.
If you really want the car, then one obvious thing to look out for would be, whether or not there are black fumes, (dunno what it's called, lol, as I'm not an expert on cars), coming out the exhaust at the back, as it means the engine is in bad shape.
Hope I helped in a way lol

Sounds as though she has taken good care of the vehicle over the years. The mileage you say isn't that high of mileage for a 2003 and the vehicle should have several miles left on it. However, it is a "Used" vehicle and anything can happen at anytime as with a new vehicle. Two things I would do prior to attempting to buy the vehicle would be to take the vehicle to a mechanic you know and trust and have the mechanic check it out from front to back to make sure everything is in good working order. If the mechanic finds some stuff that needs replaced you can try and get the price lowered to cover the parts that might need to be replaced or she can get the parts replaced. Second, I would go to my bank and speak with a loan officer to find out exactly what the value is and what or if the loan value is. In doing this, you will know if the price is within the range that is considered a fair price. If you do try to buy the vehicle I would try to get it at the lower end of the price range since it is already 8 years old since the 2011 models are all but out now. Good luck.
