What does "over-booking" mean?

I see this term used from time to time, and it seems to be used subjectively. That is, each person who uses that term seems to use it as a "catch all" phrase to fit his/her personal complaint about a particular match, i.e. "that match was over-booked" usually followed by no explanation as to WHY that match was "over-booked".

Can anyone shed some light on this? What IS "over-booking"?

To me it is throwing too many ideas into the angle or match. Now let's say the end result to make one specific person look good, right. Well overbooking would be running the same match 4 times in the a period of 3 months. The build up would be a basic feeling out process and setting the foundation.....maybe a few pull away brawls. Then maybe a contract signing or a debate. Then the actual PPV match would go to a time limit draw with no decisive winner. Blah blah blah promo time blah blah they hate each other and the rematch is set.

Now its time for the OVER BOOKING first you get a special guest ref, next you introduce the wife, third the wife "cheats" by bringing in a new character her new boy toy, forth instead of focusing on the match the next 3 weeks is spent on the wife. At the PPV the wife sits ringside with her boyfriend.......they argue over stupid things for the first 10 minutes of the match with said wrestler jumping out of the ring to yell at her. Special guest ref takes a bump and is removed from the ring so here comes Earl Hebner who flops like a fish 3 or 4 times add the boyfriend jumping the rail to attack the wrong guy with a weapon.......special ref wakes up and attacks ref #2.....the wife gets involve to kiss one wrestler but gets run into and is thrown into the guard rail. The wrestler gets concerned and carries her to the backstage.......the match ends with a count out.

Match 3 gets stipulation heavy......so now it is a no dq cage match with the only way to win is by submission. Add in a few video packages like a montage of a gym workout......the concerned husband driving his kids to school........the wife still acting like a whore.......some date segments......an orgy........fun at the nude beach......blah blah blah blah. Back at the legion of doom.....at the PPV everybody is ringside all of the damn runt children, the trophy wife, her stunt cock, the grand parents, the commissioner, the GM, the Owner, the network, the celebrity one hit wonder. So the match goes back and forth.....then the lights go out and its OMG COULD IT BE HIS TWIN BROTHER?!?!?!?!? So the match ends with the bald clones beating up the opponent.

    end scene.

Show the highlights on Impact and repeat and rinse.

I've never used this word myself, but I would assume over-booking would mean, too many matches "booked" between a wrestler and another.

I believe some would say, an over-booked match could be what had happened between The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin several years ago. They faced each other at WrestleMania's 15, 17, and 19. The same thing I would say goes for Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker at WrestleMania 25 and 26. Where once should have been enough, some would say.

I could also see it meaning of someone who wins almost every single match in which they are placed in. For example, John Cena portrays a indestructable character in which in takes 7 fully trained wrestlers to finally beat him. I could consider that over-booking for winning almost every match that he is in. Also, immense promo time could be considered over-booking. Too much time on the mic could count into the fact that the time is over-booked.

A never ending storyline is another detail of how something could be over-booked or even a rivalry. I will throw a current rivalry out there such as Randy Orton departure from Evolution. After he got "kicked" out, him and Triple H had a long storyline and even had a Last Man Standing match last year in 2009. I can kick it old school and point out Mick Foley and Terry Funk. These guys shed blood from the United States to Japan for years upon years which could have led to someone saying the entire rivalry was over-booked.

I dont know if im right or not but the way i see it is if too much is planned

if the match is over booked i think its when there is too much to fit into the time, like if it seems like the wrestlers in the match are trying to get all there stuff into the time thats been given rather than telling a story with the match and using in ring psycology to make the match enjoyable

making the match seem rushed and it doesnt usually tell a good story

Well, I would think it would mean a wrestler being booked too often or in too many matches, but by that particular example of "that match was over-booked" I can only assume that maybe the user means that there was too much going on in the match, perhaps too many wrestlers involved in it, or that the wrestlers were trying to hard to put together too many moves in a short period of time, like too many spots in a short match!

Of course this is just Speculation, but I could see people complaining if there was too much action in a match, happening too quickly, if there is wrestlers inside the Ring and Outside the Ring at the same time, and it is impossible to keep up with everything that is going on, I really don't know for sure, but Maybe that is Over-booking!

Hopefully this helps, I hope you get the Answer you are looking for!

I don't really know, since I never used that term before.

But from the few things that I've read using that term, which haven't been many, it seems that the meaning is doing something in an angle more than should've been, or adding something unnecessary to a match/angle.

The person saying this, seems to think that something was added to a match/angle, that was really unnecessary to make the match/angle work. Like adding the extra salt to something you're cooking when what you were cooking was going to taste just fine without that extra salt...thus the extra bit of salt ruined the flavor of what was being cooked.

That's basically what I'm getting...though I do think the term is used too often as a copout word when it comes to explaining why they didn't like something in a wrestling show, instead of this person actually explaining why they didn't like something.

I don't know if there's an actual wrestling term backstage, or behind the scenes in wrestling, it seems more a term made up by smarks, and it has a smark definition to it...which I believe is the definition that I just gave. I still think it's a copout, instead of giving a reason for the belief, this word is thrown into the explanation.

Well when I first saw this question I had the impression that it was constantly booking a wrestler for extra promo time, extra segments, and constant feuding. But if they use it as saying a "match was over-booked" then I have no idea what that could mean. I don't see how a match can be over-booked.

  • I would guess that the term over booking means is doing too much in a storyline. Like trying to do too many twists and turns or trying to complicate a feud by having wrestlers in it have too many reasons as to why they should face each other.

As for a match I guess it could mean at the end of having the end of it be too complicated with like multiple run ins by wrestlers not involved, or just having the ending be too confusing by trying to make it too shocking with ideas that just become flat out dumb.

What a wonderful question. Religion is, of course, the form that one's worship takes. Thus there are thousands of forms. Religion includes a system of religious beliefs and practices. The object of the religion may be false gods or the true God. Hence, there is false religion and there is true. Religion can get very fancy or remain simple. In the former case, such as it is today. In the latter case, such as it was in the Garden of Eden. What then is worship to me? How do I worship? To worship means to obey. And to obey means to worship. The two are intimately connected; indeed, they are coterminous and cannot be separated. Specifically, to obey the Sovereign Lord God Jehovah of Armies is to worship Him. I do my imperfect best in this regard. I fall on my face and get back up to try and try again. In the Garden of Eden, so long as they obeyed Jehovah, Adam and Eve were worshiping him. No temple, no Mosaic Law, no meetings. Simply leave the tree of the knowledge of good and bad alone. Simple. The minute they disobeyed, they stopped worshiping Jehovah. Same with the nation of Israel. The minute they attempted to practice a syncretistic religion they stopped worshiping Jehovah. The minute they made the golden calf, they stopped. And on and on. To worship is to obey. To obey is to worship. Hannah J Paul

Like there was too many people invited to the match so its crowded or they booked to many acts to go on at the show so theres no time for each person to perform fully.

It can also be used as if there is too much to do on your schedule.
