Military: Do you believe that the Commander-in-Chief has your best interests in mind?
I was in the Defense Department for 35 years. I KNOW how hard you work. I KNOW your officers try their hardest to get you what you need. But what are your personal thoughts about the guy at the top? Please only serious and thoughtful answers. I really want to know if you believe you are getting support.
I did not ask if you thought he had your individual best interests in mind. I asked for your personal opinion if he has the military's best interests in mind. And I understand the reluctance to criticize your commander. If you feel you cannot be candid, that's okay.

As a former enlisted service member, I'd have to answer no. But that is the way it should be.
To the C-in-C, we the service members should be the faceless masses to an extent. Our job is to go into harm's way, kill, break things and generally wreak havoc. If the C-in-C truly had our best interests in mind, we wouldn't be going off to war. We also wouldn't be going into harm's way without proper equipment, body armor, rations, and ammo as happened in the earlier days of the war. These are failures of the chain of command to prepare for the next war; as we always seem to be prepared to fight the LAST war.
Where I believe the C-in-C should be "taking care of us" is when we return from harm's way; whether intact, wounded or dead. It should be obvious to all that we did our duty and that we are respected, honored and taken care of (or our loved ones left behind in the case of those who make the ultimate sacrifice) once we return.
“Just tell us you love us, and never forget
To fight for our rights back at home while we’re gone;
To stand your own watch, no matter how long.
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust.
That we mattered to you as you mattered to us.”

This is a loaded question. The role of the Military isn't to serve our own interests, it is to serve the country's best interests. Do I believe the President is more concerned about the Military than the civilians? No. I would be more up set if he was. I knew that when I joined my needs and desires would come a distant second/third to that of the mission. Anyone who serves in the government and believes that they, as an individual, are more important than the job they provide needs to find a new job.
Do I believe he could do a better job? Of course, there is always room for improvement. I also think that he should have served some time in the Armed Services before becoming President. But these are just my thoughts.
