Calling all teachers - contribution to a school as a teacher?
Hi All,
I have been accepted to do my PGCE in September and am currently filling out a Student Profile which will be sent to schools, who will then chose if they want me on placement with them or not.
I have it nearly all filled out, am just a little stuck on the last question. "How do you hope to contribute to the wider life of the school during your placements?"
It's quite a big block to fill in and im stuck for things to write. I have only planned what I am going to write so far, things like setting up or helping at extra-curricular activities after school, helping to enhance cross-curricular initiatives, participating in social and community projects off the school site, helping with special projects that benefit the whole school such as school plays, fundraising, helping with field trips, encourage healthy eating and physical exercise.
But that will only take up a 1/3 of the block so need help of what else to write!
Basically, teachers, how do you contribute and how do you expect placement students (that will be with you for approx. 2 months) to contribute to your school.
Thanks for any help :)

Princess - what you have written is very good, extremely thorough and interesting. Just because there is a huge section provided for you to respond, does not mean you have to fill in the entire space. You have included more than anyone could possibly do - even with the two months of the time you will be there. You have to think in terms of what the school will be doing and how those events mentioned will fit in.
One thing you can add is that you will participate in the weekly or monthly staff meetings, perhaps assist with the disciplinary program the school might offer...for example, in our school, we have ISS (In School Suspension) for the students who have been a problem in class and need to be punished by spending a day or two separated from class members in order to complete class work and the like. Sometimes, we will have our Student Teachers assist by maintaining the class and learning how the disciplinary part of school ethics work. We also allow the Student Teachers to sit in on parent/teacher conferences so they can gain knowledge on what to say and what not to say in those kinds of meetings.
So, you see - the information you want to include is okay. Always mention that you want to work with teachers throughout the building....you can gain a lot by visiting other classes to compare how teachers work, and how students respond to the differentiated teaching styles.
I hope this helps. I am so proud of you and the fact that you are pursuing teaching as a service (not a career or job - believe me - there is a difference). Everybody is not cut out for this service. You really have to love children and working with their parents and other adults who are in this field. God bless you and if you need more help - check out my email - I am very supportive and don't mind helping you with websites of interest and tid bits on "what-to-do-if" ideas.

I think you answered it pretty well. I'm not sure what PGCE stands for, but it sounds like this is your student teaching or the placement before that. In that case, you have come up with quite a few avenues you can help with. One idea with the phsyical excercise could be creating a recess walking program with incentives for the kids. Other than that, all I think you should have to do is practice being a teacher and teach while there!

They know you're gonna be busy with the amount of lessons that you need to plan etc.
Stay after school (even though you have a done of things to do) and always ask everyone 'do you want any help'. I often put up wall displays. I would also help to organise activities such as a treasure hunt. For trips I would help to make up the parent packs. I would also teach French ( I can't speak it, but I would cover for the SENCO as their role is really important).
The role of the teacher extends beyond 9-3, make sure on your first few days you are out meeting your children's parents- make them feel welcome to come and talk to you. Perhaps you could organise a meet and greet with you and them one evening after school. It will show the staff in the school that you are aware of the importance of them and if any issues do arise with their child you know them on a better basis.
Good luck - will be the hardest year ever but stick at it and never forget the reason you choose this as a career

If you want to eat truly healthy, lose body fat consistently, normalize your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, prevent cancer, and even boost your brain health and energy levels, you may have heard all over the news that the Paleo Diet has been found to be one of the best methods of achieving all of these benefits compared to any other popular “fad” diets out there. Go here https://tr.im/k56V5
The truth is that the Paleo Diet will never be considered a fad because it’s just simply the way that humans evolved to eat over approximately 2 million years. And eating in a similar fashion to our ancestors has been proven time and time again to offer amazing health benefits, including prevention of most diseases of civilization such as cancer, heart disease, alzheimers, and other chronic conditions that are mostly caused by poor diet and lifestyle. One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Paleo Diet is that it’s a meat-eating diet, or a super low-carb diet. This is not true

If you intend to train your small kid to see frequent phrases that will probably run into and which are exceptions to standard phonetic rules then things you need is here now https://tr.im/5EQsL , Children Learning Reading program.
Children Learning Reading is a phonetic centered examining system. This means that it first shows your child the letters of the alphabet and the seems they make. It then applies that understanding to simply help your child figure out words based on the seems the words make. This system was created to train the essential "code" for examining initially. Just following this has been acquired are conditions, problems, and variations introduced.

some good answers above. I would add:
something about how you as a person and the personal choices you've made in your life (style of dress, manner of speaking, actively being professional, etc.) fosters the same in other teachers and is a positive adult model for students
