Vancouver BC. What outdoor activities can you do in the winter months?

We like to hike and would like to know what else you can do in the winter months within a 1/2 hour from Van. We know it rains a lot there. Where is the closest snow shoe areas and how much does it cost to get up there on a lift?

thanks

Snow Shoeing on the North Shore Moutains:

Cypress Mountain (provincial park) in West Van has some great show shoeing trails. There is no lift, you have to drive up (it's about a 20 minute drive up) and it's free to roam the trails (unless you are renting shoes). There are also some trails further down on the mountain (Hollyburn trails) so you don't need to drive all the way to the top.

Grouse Mountain in North Van also has a lot of good trails (better than Cypress in my opinion) but you do need to take the Gondola up (it's around 8 minutes, I think) which costs around $40.00 for the day (it costs more if you are going up to ski or snowboard).

There is also Seymour, which is a bit cheaper than Grouse, I think, but I don't really know the mountain.

All of these mountains are less than half an hour from downtown Vancouver (on a good day).

I'll give you links to the mountains.

    Hope this helped! Good luck!

In winter in Vancouver and the surrounding areas, I have seen people hiking, walking, running, and even playing tennis when it isn't actually raining. Hiking is almost better in winter, since cooler weather makes it easier to really get going in my opinion. You can ski at Grouse which is accessible by bus, you can do skiing, cross country and downhill, snowshoeing, at Seymour and Cypress mountains. Both of those are a 1/2 hour drive from downtown. Don't know the prices but they should have websites.

I'm sure there are lots of places where you can snowshoe that are within a reasonable distance of Vancouver. The North Shore Mountain areas come to mind. Lift prices vary from one area to the next.

Rain at sea level usually equals snow in the mountains.

Whistler or Grouse mountain are good locations for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding or maybe tubing?
