They were so good without him then he had to join and screw up their Prog sound!

BQ Fav Prog band?

I don't know but I definitely agree with you. Maybe they just saw dollar signs because the only thing he did well was make them a lot of money. Musically I think they were way better without him though.

I gotta agree with Karl and Magic on this one!

Most every band had that one piece or two of their puzzle that they have to rearrange or replace in order to become successful!

Look at Black Sabbath,at one point they were a 6 piece band(in addition to the core 4 members, they also had a bottle neck guitar player and sax player),but once they got rid of the other 2 guys, look where their career went!

Look what happened to The Beatles after they got rid of Pete Best in August of 1962,in less than a year they became the biggest band in England with a number 1 album and 3 number 1 singles!

While The Who were known as The High Numbers, their drummer was a guy by the name of Doug Sandon(yes I know these kinds of things)and look what happened to them after they got Keith Moon as drummer and changed their name!

Look at Fleetwood Mac,hell that band was what lineup changes were all about, but look what happened once they got Stevie and Lindsey in the band.

I could go on for awhile, but I hope I made my point!

I also agree with what some have said about Evolution, that was a very good album! In fact it has my all time favorite Journey song City of the Angels.

The point is that Journey needed Steve Perry to get to that next level in their careers,I think its safe to say that if it wasn't for Steve Perry, people wouldn't know who Journey is!

    To make them good.

Just because people don't like that they wrote a different style of songs, doesn't make them bad. Gregg Rolie was a bad singer, just flat out bad. Journey was going nowhere and they knew it. Neal Schon and Ross Valory were taking vocal lessons as a last ditch effort to find something that worked.

Enter Steve Perry. They instantly became relevant. People hate them because they are played on the radio and they sound a little bit poppy. The rest of the band didn't change. Neal Schon was still doing amazing work with the guitar, although he was overshadowed a bit by Steve's voice. The first 3 albums were slow, boring and just overall a mess. They had a good core, they just needed that one more thing, and Steve Perry was it.

Uhhhhhh apparently You haven't heard Evolution which is by far their best album, or Infinity either. They didn't go all Pop till after that. Their first 5 albums are Godly, not just the first 3.

    BA: Yes

BA: They Live by Schoolyard Heroes

    *Edit*

I disagree Guys. In My opinion "Evolution" is a perfect album without a single bad song. While I love the first three I can't say that about any of them.

And so You think they sucked 100% of the time in the 80's? Listen harder

"After The Fall" from Frontiers. EPIC guitar and vocals workout with an epic outro

"Stone In Love" the only good song from Escape

And GESM, I can do WAY BETTER from Infinity

    "Winds Of March"

i agree, but i think infinity was a good album. i wouldn't say that steve perry joined to "screw up their sound", or that they "sucked in the 80's" though.

i didn't care for evolution when it was released, and journey after evolution was yet another reason i stopped listening to the radio in the early 80's.

The first three are the best ones, though, Darth!

I mean, sure, "Wheel in the Sky" is awesome and all that, but "I'm Gonna Leave You" is even better!

    BA: Genesis.

BA2: I think I'm gonna go listen to some Budgie.

    @ Darth -

    Great. I lost.
